Where it all began.........Sporting Luck ridden by Tim Smith winning the Lady Dudley Cup at Chaddesley Corbett in 1978. One of the best point to pointers ever to grace the Yorkshire scene, he suffered a succession of injury problems but thanks to the patience of his owner Miss Joyce Hey and trainer Peter Beaumont, he was still in top form well into his teens. In 1982, aged 15, he was undefeated winning the open races at the South Durham (in a field of 21 ) Brocklesby, Holcombe and Vale of Lune and then won both outings in 1983 in the Vale of Lune and Duke of Buccleuch's Opens, after which he went into an honourable retirement. Winner of 20 of just 28 career starts between 1974 and and 1983 he was undefeated in eight appearances at Whittington.
