Dr. Maharaj is a well-respected Ophthalmologist practicing in Trinidad and Tobago since 2004 and is proudly expanding his services to the Spice Island. His wife, Elizabeth, a British-Trained Intensive Care nurse, is a citizen and they both are fulfilling a desire to provide Ophthalmic services to the Grenadines
Training and Qualifications
Dr Maharaj completed his undergraduate degree in medicine at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, graduating in 1992. He completed his specialist training in 2004 at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre which was at the time the second largest eye facility in Europe, covering the West Midlands.
His first exposure to Ophthalmology was the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre. There his basic training took place which evolved to higher specialist training. As such he was exposed and trained to manage all facets of eye diseases. He was also able to interact with other residents from around the world and also to be trained by some of the top British ophthalmologists. He spent some ten years in the United Kingdom, thereby gaining a broad and thorough range of experiences in Ophthalmology that is unrivalled by any other practitioner in the Caribbean.
David was fortunate to specialise at a time when the UK National Health Scheme was undergoing transformation to deliver and maintain an improved level of patient healthcare. This involved ensuring proper training and certification of health care providers and insistence on maintenance of their certification through continual medical education and professional development. It shows in his exceptional demonstration of caring and concern for all his patients.
