It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Professor Tengiz Tsertsvadze, a respected leader in healthcare and a kind soul. His contributions to the field of infectious diseases have made a lasting impact.
He was a distinguished figure in the medical community, particularly known for his leadership in infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, and viral hepatitis. He was the Director General of the Infectious Diseases, AIDS, and Clinical Immunology Research Center and a professor at Tbilisi State University. His significant contributions include founding the HIV/AIDS Center in Georgia in the early 1980s and playing a pivotal role in the country's successful Hepatitis C Elimination Program in recent years, which has become a global model.
Professor Tsertsvadze's work in public health extended to his active involvement in managing the COVID-19 response in Georgia. Under his guidance, Georgia implemented swift and effective measures that helped control the pandemic, earning the country international praise for its public health response. He was also a vocal advocate for vaccination, particularly emphasizing the importance of vaccinating vulnerable groups and healthcare workers.
