This week (18th - 24th January 2021) is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. The week aims to highlight the importance of regular cervical screening for women’s health.

Cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer in women under 35 with two women in the UK per day dying from the disease. Regular cervical screening appointments can prevent up to 75% of instances of cervical cancer, saving 5000 lives per year. Despite this, many women are reluctant to have this test done with a quarter of women not responding to their screening invitation.

Having a smear is nothing to fear, it really is so quick and simple to do. Please don't put off getting it done.

Symptoms normally occur after manual labour, repetitive activities, high-load motions or from sustained awkward postures involving the forearm, wrist and hand.

Treatment is very specific to the individual and the duration of their symptoms. Treatment can include:
- Graded exercises
- Contrast bathing
- K-taping and strapping
- Work station set up reviews
- Adaptive aids
- Strategies such as pacing or adapting activities
- Trigger point massage

If you feel you may have tennis elbow and would like to be assessed. Please contact Abby Manley-Gilbert at Avenue Clinic - 01481 728798

FINE MOTOR SKILLS

Many injuries and conditions can impact on fine motor skills (the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists). From children to older people, dexterity is important in enabling us to interact with our environment, communicate and function on a daily basis. Several factors can contribute to having difficulty gripping and manipulating objects, such as the points listed in this image.

Thorough assessment and tailored treatment programmes offered by Guernsey Hand Therapy can help to improve fine motor skills. If this is something you are struggling with then please get in touch to book an assessment. Avenue Clinic

Turning myself into a wax work today!

Therapeutic wax can help with pain and stiffness of the hand and wrist. The heat from the warm wax causes an increase in blood flow to the area. In turn this causes the soft tissue structures in the hand to relax. This then makes it easier to conduct manipulation and stretches to the stiff joints or structures, resulting in an increase in movement.

This is one of the many treatment modalities used at Guernsey Hand Therapy. If you feel wax therapy is something you may benefit from, please contact Avenue Clinic to book an assessment.

TRIGGER FINGER

In the early stages of trigger thumb or finger, splinting can help to reduce and even resolve symptoms.

By splinting the affected joints it prevents the movements that aggravates the tendon and also allows time for the inflammation to dissipate and reduce. Meaning the tendon can return to normal size and slide easily through the pullie system of the finger or thumb. Leading to no more painful locking!

It it important if you have these symptoms to get them seen to as soon as possible. Leaving this condition means symptoms can become more chronic and difficult to resolve. If left untreated it can result in steroid injections or even surgery.

CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Is the second most common peripheral nerve compression after Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The cubital tunnel is located on the inside of the elbow, not to be confused with the carpal tunnel which is located at the wrist. In cases that are mild or intermittent, conservative management such as splinting (bespoke supports), nerve gliding exercises and postural management advice can improve or even resolve symptoms.

Severe cases if left untreated can go on to require surgery and a release of the cubital tunnel to resolve compression on the ulnar nerve.

If you are suffering from these symptoms then please get in touch with Abby Manley-Gilbert at Avenue Clinic on 01481 728798, email admin@avenueclinic.co.uk or use the online booking system.

My Background - Abby Manley-Gilbert

I am a Senior Occupational Therapist (BSc Hons) who specialises in Hand Therapy. I am a registered member of the British Association of Hand Therapists, Royal College of Occupational Therapists and The Health and Care Professions Council.

I have over 9 years’ experience in Occupational Therapy with 5 years specialising in Hand Therapy, most recently working for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. I am very much astute to the development of services to meet the needs of service users and recently presented at the 2019 Hand Surgery & Therapy Congress in Berlin on ‘Exploring the extended role of Hand Therapy Assistants’.

I am originally from Guernsey and have recently returned to the Island to practice. I am very keen to develop a Hand Therapy service to provide client centred, evidence based care to the Island.
