Carl Rogers, reflecting on his journey in On Becoming a Person (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1961, p.32), shares a pivotal shift in his approach: "In my early professional years, I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?"

This evolution in thought from a focus on "treating" to facilitating personal growth is a profound reminder of the power of supportive relationships in the healing process. Rogers' insight underscores the significance of creating an environment that empowers individuals to embark on their own journey of self-discovery and growth.

💡 Key Significance to Counselling: This shift highlights the core of person-centered therapy, emphasizing the therapist's role in providing a supportive, empathetic, and non-judgmental environment that encourages clients to explore and utilize their inner resources for personal development.

🌱 Takeaway: Let's apply this wisdom in our interactions with others, whether in professional settings or personal relationships. By focusing on how we can support and empower those around us, we contribute to a culture of growth and self-discovery. It's a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the most impactful thing we can do is simply be there for someone, offering the space and acceptance they need to grow.

The List recently asked an impossible question! I’ve contributed an ‘expert’ answer, based on personal experience of menopause and from seeing many clients struggling with it.

It feels like there is still much unknown and mysterious about hormones. Yet they are such a powerful driver of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

I certainly don’t have the answers, ‘expert’ or otherwise: but I welcome the chance to talk about it. The impact is real, it is not ‘all in your head’, and it shouldn’t be minimised or hushed up as something to be ashamed of.

It’s a big question, we know! So we asked five Guernsey experts to share an insight to help women get the most out of this powerful life stage.

If you experience social anxiety, you’ll know that it runs so much deeper than feeling shy in social situations. It can make you feel so uncomfortable, emotionally and physically - especially if you’re around people you don’t know very well - that it can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

This is a great post from a worthy charity.

In my experience supporting people with problematic alcohol use, it is common that the problem arose from masking anxiety and underlying neurodiversity or trauma. Often structured behavioural work helps to reduce alcohol use and maintain abstinence or moderation. However, my belief is the most effective and important part of the work is about exploring and learning to accept and show compassion to the ‘unmasked you’.

There is so much stigma and shame around alcohol use, but our brains are designed to get ‘hooked’ and there is so much social pressure to engage.

Do get in touch if you would like support making changes.

The core of my practice (and indeed life philosophy), is person-centred. Here the father of the approach, Carl Rogers, beautifully illustrates the importance of remaining non-directive and respecting the autonomy of the client.

This is a good article about a fantastic initiative to address homelessness in Guernsey - and yes it does exist, more than you might think.

It’s rare to see people sleeping rough on the streets of Guernsey, so many people don't realise the extent of the homelessness crisis in our community. But the statistics from a recent report show that over 1,000 islanders currently don't have secure housing.

This roughly equates to 1 in 64 island residents, a startling number when compared to a report by Shelter which found that, by comparison, 1 in 182 are homeless in England.

Local charity Caritas Guernsey is on a mission to eliminate homelessness and address social exclusion in our community. It recently announced its ambition to raise £1m for a development that will provide accommodation for people experiencing homelessness in Guernsey as they get back on their feet, providing them with a sense of community and restoring their dignity.

So we reached out to them to find out what homelessness looks like here in Guernsey, and to find out more about their fundraising initiative, The Big Skipton Sleep Out.
