Guernsey ALB ‘Spirit of Guernsey’ was requested to launch at 9:49am on Sunday 18 January to a fishing vessel at St Martin’s Point with strong southerly tide.

The fishing vessel carrying two crew members had become disabled after a fishing float and line became entangled around its propeller between Longue Pierre Rock and St Martin’s Point beacon.

A nearby vessel responded quickly to assist, establishing a tow and holding the fishing vessel steady against the strong tidal flow, while the Y boat managed to cut the entangled line.

Upon arrival, the ALB established a tow and safely towed the fishing vessel to St Peter Port.

The ALB and volunteer crew retuned to station.

Thank you to all those involved for their prompt response and teamwork.

First evening exercise of 2026 on Friday 8 January.

Friday night marked the first evening exercise of the year, and we were thrilled to welcome our new volunteer crew on board! Both the ALB and ILB were out on the water, putting skills into practice and working together as a team.

Due to the storm the lifeboat shop will be closed today.

08/01/2026

A red wind warning and a red tide and flood warning have been issued for the following 24 hours, ahead of Storm Goretti.

The decision has therefore been made to close Perelle at 1pm today because of the flooding risks. It would be sensible to avoid all coastal areas later on today, as the winds start to pick up.

A final assessment of the forecast is being carried out this morning, and updated advice will be issued after that meeting, however we continue to advise you to cancel plans and activities for this evening and stay indoors.

For all of the latest information and advice, go to gov.gg/StormGoretti.

Guernsey ‘ALB’ was requested to launch on Wednesday 7 January at 06:13 to a 10 metre Dutch yacht with three crew members on board 11 miles south of St Martins Point.

The yacht had lost power and the crew were disorientated, very tired and sea sick.

When the ‘ALB’ arrived on scene power had been restored. The yacht proceeded to St Peter Port under its own power escorted by the ‘ALB’.

The ‘ALB’ volunteer crew retuned to station.

Sea swimming tips to keep you safe this winter.
Make sure you check out our top tips for a safe dip first.
Open water swimming is becoming more popular and many open water swimmers have continued to swim but they can find the water has dropped in temperature and seas can become more challenging.
The RNLI wants to stress the importance of taking extra care when sea swimming (or dipping) at this time of year.
✅ Don’t swim alone – always go with someone else to a familiar spot
✅ Always check the weather forecast, including tide information and wave height
✅ If in doubt, stay out – there is always another day to go for a swim
✅ Take plenty of warm clothes for before and after your dip, along with a hot drink or a hot water bottle to help you warm up again when you come out of the water
✅ Wearing a wetsuit will help increase your buoyancy and reduce the chances of suffering cold water shock
✅ Be seen – wear a brightly coloured swim cap and consider using a tow float
✅ Acclimatise to the water temperature slowly – never jump straight in
✅ Stay in your depth and know your limits
✅ If you get into trouble remember to live by leaning back in the water, extending your arms and legs, and resisting the urge to thrash around to gain control of your breathing
✅Take a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch
✅ If you or someone else is in trouble 📞 999 and ask for the Coastguard
