We had a visit from year 4 at Forest school earlier this week. A first for us as the lifeboat was called out on a shout just before they arrived and we had no lifeboat to show them! Luckily whilst we were giving a presentation to them in the lifeboat station the lifeboat returned and the children finally got to have a look around the boat. A fun afternoon out for the children who were very excited and extremely well behaved.

All our new recruits have now completed their training, bringing us to 26 volunteer crew members ready to launch when the call comes. Proud of every single one of them and grateful for the dedication that keeps our community safe.

The ALB ‘Spirit of Guernsey’ and volunteer crew was requested to launch at 20:43 on Thursday 23 April to a 12 metre French yacht with 2 crew members on board 1 mile south of St Martin’s Point.

The yacht had suffered damage and unable to set any sails and the engine had also failed. Due to the prevailing conditions the crew were unable to carry out any repairs.

A tow was established and the sailing yacht and its crew were safely brought into St Peter Port harbour.

The ALB and volunteer crew returned to station.

When you fall into trouble at sea, every moment counts. Being able to swiftly locate a casualty can make all the difference.

That's why we are strongly encouraging all mariners to carry a registered Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) whenever you are at sea.

From 15 April 2026, PLBs on UK-flagged vessels must be registered, just like EPIRBs. While these rules apply to UK vessels, we urge all Guernsey mariners to do the same.

Registering your emergency device is one of the simplest ways to improve your safety at sea.

✅ In the event of emergency, it helps our Maritime Watch Officers know who is in trouble, where you are, and what help is needed.

✅ EPIRBs and PLBs work independently of your boat’s power or navigation systems, which can fail in emergencies.

Already have a PLB? Now is the perfect time to check the following, ahead of the boating season:

✅ Registration. Ensure your device is registered online with up-to-date information. Registration is quick, easy and free at https://www.gov.uk/register-406-beacons

✅ Lifejacket. This is a good place to keep your PLB. Always check you have both before taking to the water.

✅ Batteries. Don't forget to check that your batteries are in date. Any expired batteries can be disposed of free of charge at the Household Waste & Recycling Centre.

Taking a few minutes to register or check your device could make a life-saving difference at sea.

Our voluntary lifeboat crew had an early start this morning as Spirit of Guernsey headed to Marine and General Engineers in St Sampsons for a spell out of the water.

The ALB was pressure washed and scrubbed and various maintenance tasks were undertaken. She was back on her swinging mooring this afternoon.

Tomorrow we will be supporting our friends in Alderney who are bringing their ALB to Marine and General and thereafter to our pontoon mooring for a day or so. Alderney is having some maintenance undertaken that can't be done on their swinging mooring in Alderney.
