ME Awareness Day is held on May 12th in honor of Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12, 1820. Nightingale is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing, but lesser known is that she suffered from a chronic illness for much of her life—believed by many to have been Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)

Her personal struggle with long-term illness, combined with her dedication to healthcare reform, makes her a symbolic figure for the ME community, which often faces challenges in recognition, diagnosis, and treatment.
