As part of their Taste of Medicine week, a group of aspiring medical students had the opportunity to spend time at IslandHealth, gaining firsthand insight into the life of a General Practitioner.

The students were welcomed by Dr Mairi Reynolds, who shared her experiences as a GP in Guernsey. During their time at the practice, the pupils explored the variety and fulfilment that comes with a career in general practice, from patient care and community involvement to the unique opportunities for medical training on the island.

Dr Reynolds spoke passionately about the profession, highlighting the strong relationships built with patients, the broad range of cases seen each day, and the deep satisfaction that comes with making a difference in people’s lives. She also introduced the pupils to the diverse career paths available within general practice, both locally and beyond.

The visit was part of a broader initiative to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and give them a meaningful insight into the realities of a medical career.

We wish the students every success as they prepare their applications to medical school and hope their time at IslandHealth has strengthened their passion for the path ahead.

🌟 Exciting contribution from our visiting Sports Medicine Consultant, Dr. Craig Sheridan! 🌟

Earlier this year, Dr. Sheridan co-authored a scoping review on how exercise and physical activity impact paediatric mental health. This important work directly informed the development of the Paediatric Mental Health module on — a practical resource now helping clinicians have better conversations around child mental health and movement. 💬🏃‍♂️🧠

🎉 Congratulations Dr. Stephen Roper BEM! 🎉

We’re incredibly proud to share that our very own Dr. Stephen Brennand Roper— who was a GP partner at IslandHealth for over 30 years—has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours. 🇬🇧

During his esteemed career, Dr. Roper:
• Served as Chairman and Senior Partner, leading the expansion and modernization of our surgery, including the introduction of computerisation in primary care back in the ’90s
• Played a crucial role in cardiopulmonary medicine and high-quality screenings at Guernsey Chest and Heart LBG
• Volunteered extensively beyond the practice—as Medical Advisor for Chest & Heart Association, St John Ambulance & Rescue, Race Doctor for International Powerboat Week, Guernsey Civil Defence, and even served as President of the Guernsey Classic Car Club 

His commitment to excellence and selfless service has made a real difference not only to our patients and community—but to health services across Guernsey.

Dr. Roper, thank you for more than 30 years of dedication, leadership, and care. This recognition couldn’t be more well-deserved!

📣 Smear Test Update for Guernsey Patients 🧬💜

From now on, if you test HPV negative you will be recalled for smear tests every 5 years instead of 3️⃣. This is a science-backed change happening across the UK, and follows the UK National Screening Committee's recommendation. 🇬🇬➡️🇬🇧.

✅ Why the change?
Because the new HPV test is highly accurate, picking up early changes long before any issues arise. For those who don’t have HPV, it’s safe to wait 5 years.

⚠️ Who will still be seen more often?
If you test HPV positive, you’ll still get yearly follow-ups. This is a tailored approach to screening based on your personal risk 💡

🚫 This is not a cost-cutting decision — it’s about better, safer, evidence-based care.

📅 Don’t worry! You’ll still be contacted when it’s time for your next smear. The move will be gradual so please attend whenever you are invited by us🧑‍⚕️💬 If you are overdue your Free Cervical Screening please book for this.
