THE CURSE OF COMPARISON
This issue is the cause of many problems for youngsters, especially with relation to self-esteem and self-worth.
We compare ourselves to others more than ever now. This is exacerbated by social media of course. We are led into a false sense of reality as everybody dresses their social media shop window exactly as they wish, in order to portray whatever they desire to the world. Many use social media as a means of achieving self-worth. This is an unhealthy approach because you are relying on others to make you feel good. It is important that you feel good in your own right.
When you look into a shop window, you only see part of what is in the shop. There is a lot more to be seen. The same goes for us. We can hide depression and anxiety behind our social media shop windows. We can hide our worries, fears and family difficulties. No-one needs to see our lack of self-esteem or confidence. We can choose to share our struggles with the world or keep them completely to ourselves. To the world, we can be confident, happy, positive, have self-esteem and appear to have a great life. Whereas the reality can be a totally different picture.

It’s not just how we look that we compare but our lives, jobs and possessions too. This leads to people believing that others are doing far better, are happier than them and more beautiful or handsome. We assess our life by how well we believe we are doing compared to others.
Let’s step back into the real world and consider for a moment that everyone has struggles at some point in their lives. You only have to look at celebrities who, on the face of it, have a brilliant life, but underneath they suffer and struggle and question themselves. Does that sounds familiar?
