‘At our 20 week scan we found out Teddy was measuring small. The weeks that followed were full of tests, hospital visits and some really scary conversations about what might be going on.
At 30 weeks I was diagnosed with preeclampsia, and was promptly flown to Southampton where I was monitored closely, and at exactly 34 weeks Teddy was born weighing just 1.2kg.
The NICU became our new normal. Watching Teddy go through daily blood tests, feeding tube changes and many other procedures never got easier. It was heartbreaking every single time.
Our breastfeeding journey was another mountain to climb. It seemed impossible to begin with, surrounded by wires, alarms, and an overwhelming amount of unknowns. But with determination, support from the NICU breastfeeding team, and the incredible guidance of Anita, we got there. And now, a whole year on, we’re still breastfeeding, something I once thought would never be possible. It’s become one of our proudest achievements.
Now, a year on, what felt like total chaos at the time is starting to show itself as one of the most raw, powerful and strangely beautiful experiences of my life. Birth really does crack you open. And I’m beginning to see how strong that can make you.
To anyone going through something similar right now, your strength is incredible. Today we’re thinking of all the babies born too soon and the families who love them with everything they’ve got’ 💜
