Mums are worried when baby stretches to poo or farts and cry in pain.

Several factors can cause that but the commonest can be colic pain. Baby can cry for hours lasting for several hours in a day.

Some causes may be allergic reaction, gas, overstimulation to noise or light, developing brain etc.

The most avoidable we want to learn today is that which is from Gas.

Mummy is now learning to position and attach baby to breast and baby is also learning to suckle so when baby isn’t well attached air easily gets trapped in the food tract.

Because the *food tract is immature* , the little air trapped makes them feel uncomfortable and that makes them cry and stretch.

We should also see the food tract as a pipe tube, once air enters, it can only come out through the a**s as fart or air or through the mouth as belch. So when baby farts or belches a lot, it means baby might have taken so much air when breastfeeding so we need to watch out.

As baby and mum master the act of good position and attachment and good suckling, such things reduces gradually and stops gradually on its own as the food tract matures.

So for the mean time, Learn to position baby well to breast, when breastfeeding and you hear any noise like phew phew, it doesn’t mean baby is enjoying the milk, it means baby is sucking air.
Just as when air bubbles comes and makes noise when put in a bucket of water, the same happens when baby is sucking air.

So when you hear that sounds, break the suckle and reposition baby again.

When baby is well attached, you won’t hear any noise when suckling.

Burp baby by gently massaging or rubbing the back with baby on your lap or your shoulder after each feed and at your leisure. As frequently as you remember you just do it.

*When you need to report*
•When baby has fever
• When baby vomits repeatedly after each feed
• When baby has blood in stool
• When baby is weak and unresponsive
• When pain interferes with breastfeeding
• When baby doesn’t gain weight

We should note that most of the over the counter drugs doesn’t cure it, it goes naturally as the brain and food tract develops.

Let’s report if we are not comfortable rather than giving over the counter drugs.

*TOPIC: *IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION*

✅ Vitamin A is essential for child survival, health, growth and development. Vitamin A deficiency is also the leading cause of preventable childhood blindness.

✅ Children with even mild or moderate vitamin A deficiency have weaker immune systems and suffer from more respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases, malarial episodes and measles, contributing to an increased risk of death.

✅ By meeting the vitamin A needs (through supplementation, fortification or adequate diet) of children under five years the death of children in general could be reduced.

*✅ What is Vitamin A*?

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in many foods.

✅ Vitamin A is important for normal vision, strong immune system, and reproduction.
Vitamin A also helps the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs work properly.

*✅ Types of Vitamin A*

There are two different types of vitamin A.

🌴The first type, preformed vitamin A, is found in meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products.

🌴 The second type, provitamin A, is found in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based products. The most common type of provitamin A in foods and dietary supplements is beta-carotene.

🌴 Vitamin A is found naturally in many foods and is added to some foods, such as milk and cereal.

🌴You can get recommended amounts of vitamin A by eating a variety of foods, including the following:

🌱Beef liver and other organ meats (but these foods are also high in cholesterol, so limit the amount you eat).

🦈🐟Some types of fish, such as salmon.

🍃🍀Green leafy vegetables and other green, orange, and yellow vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, and squash.

🥭Fruits, including pawpaw,apricots, and mangos.

🌞*VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION *

From six months to 59 months, each child is entitled to take a Vitamin A supplement every 6 months as part of their routine check up.

This is to ensure that children are getting enough and to also compensate for inadequacies.

You can visit the nearest health center where they do ‘’weighing’’ to have your child immunized.

Thank you all for your time. Merry Christmas and Happy new year.🎄🎄🎄🎄

Topic for today : What to expect within 1 week after receiving a newborn 👶.

For Baby 👶

•🤱 Newborns are naturally expected to breath well although it may be irregular with few episodes where it seems they have stopped breathing for few seconds 😅 and then bounce back.

• 🤱Newborn 👶 is expected to cry.

• 🤱Baby should p*e (within 12-24hours) and pass a dark-green sticky stool (within 24-48 hours).

• 🤱A new baby 👶 may sleep for long hours (upto 17 hours out of 24).

• 🤱Baby should be able to grasp your finger when you put it into their hand 😃 and open their mouth and turn towards that side in search for the breast when nose or cheeks are touched.

•🤱 Newborns are expected to suckle. At times especially in the premature babies suckling may not be very well achieved due to the immature muscle.

•🤱 Newborns are expected to have spaces in some parts of the head with up and down movement (pulsating) and this is very normal.

•🤱 Newborns mostly loose weight within first 2 weeks compared to their birth weight.

• 🤱Babies may also have some color change. The skin, palm or soles of feet 🦶🏼, eyes may become light yellow (jaundice) within 3-5 days when assessed under light. Kindly speak to your pediatrician as several factors could account for it. Although some may be normal, we need to rule other factors including dehydration and other severe conditions

• 🤱Newborns May have swollen ge****ls and breast with fluid in it.

• 🤱Lastly some babies may have swollen face and eyes due to the stress of hitting the head and face to the delivery canal during birth. No stress as these are all normal.

In conclusion, babies bring us the very best of memories. These are some things that newborns can present with that new mums should look out for.

Thank you for your time.

Kindly Share your experiences and how you managed it🥰
