You might think breast cancer only affects older women, but I was shocked to meet an 18 year old girl diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer.
Her mother brought her into the ER with complaints of uncontrollable bleeding from a large open wound on her left breast, which had developed as the cancer progressed.
Upon assessing her in the ER, I noticed a foul-smelling wound with severe bleeding that had soaked her dress. She was weak, pale, restless, and vomited persistently. Her rapid breathing and consistently low blood pressure, accompanied by a higher pulse rate, indicated hypovolemic shock—a critical condition where the heart can’t pump enough blood due to extreme blood loss or dehydration.
Promptly, we reenforced the wound dressing, administered IV medications that helped arrest the bleeding, relieve her from severe pain, and correct her body's fluid imbalances.
She had earlier booked for radiotherapy but had to be rescheduled until she was stabilized. By the end of my shift, my patient's vital signs were within normal, the bleeding was controlled, and her condition improved.
Her mother shared that, despite seeking early medical attention, they turned to herbal treatments until the condition worsened, leaving them with no choice but to pursue radiotherapy in hopes of a better outcome. I hope her radiotherapy session commences soon.
I was deeply moved by her diagnosis at such a young age. It’s a reminder that breast cancer doesn't only strike in your 40s or 50s anymore—women of all ages are vulnerable.
Therefore, if you have a strong family history of breast cancer, I encourage you to seek thorough medical assessment and prompt treatment should the results be positive that you have breast cancer.
It will interest you to know that although family history plays a major role, lifestyle choices can also increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
As women, to reduce our risk of breast cancer, we need to:
📌Stay active
📌Eat a balanced diet
📌 Maintain a healthy weight
📌Limit oral contraceptive use
📌 Have periodic medical check-ups
📌 Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol
Early detection saves lives! Don’t wait until it’s too late!💯🤗
