The Public Health Alliance International Ghana (PHAIG), on Thursday and Friday the 13th and 14th November, paid a visit to the Akwapem North Constituency to discuss a very important issue with selected stakeholders: The rising incidence and challenge of drug abuse among the youth of Akuapem.
This vital initiative, Sponsored by Hon. Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament of the Akuapem North Constituency, and implemented by the Public Health Alliance International Ghana, is focused on educating and sensitizing the youth on this pervasive menace, and establishing systems and policies to address the problem.
During our visit, we held a round table discussion with relevant stakeholders such as, Heads of high schools, the municipal directorate on mental health, Hon. Sammi Awuku Foundation, Department of social welfare, youth leaders, among others.
PHAIG also paid a visit to the office of the Paramount Chief of the Akuapem Traditional Area, where we met with various chiefs and traditional council representatives to discuss the important role they play and seek their support as we begin this very important project. During our engagement, we presented the official project charter to the Omanhene.
We also visited various high schools within Akuapem North to undertake a pre-project survery and reaffirm collaborative commitment with school heads and selected project champions.
We are very excited about this initiative and look forward to a significant improvement in the incidence and prevalence of drug abuse among the youth in Akuapem North and the country at large. Together, we can build a stronger healthier youth and protect the future of this country.
