THIS WEEK ON KIDNEY DISEASE.
Did you know that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a leading public health problem worldwide, killing about 2.4 million people each year?
The estimated global prevalence of CKD is 13.4% (11.7%-15.1%) , Global Prevalence of Chronic Kidney disease-2016.
Kidney disease is becoming more common in Ghana, especially among young adults, with more than half of patients under the age of 40.
In Ghana, it costs an average of GHC5,000 per month to stay on dialysis aside medications.
It's the kidney! In vertebrates, including humans, there are two kidneys located on either side of the spine beneath the rib cage. They are both reddish brown in colour and shaped like beans about the size of a clenched adult fist. Though small in size, they are very indispensable in the role they play in man. Some of which are;
- The excretion of waste metabolic substances and excess fluids.
- The production of the erythropoietin hormone responsible for Red Blood Cells production.
- The regulation of blood pressure.
