Screening helps to identify any precancers in the cervix. When precancers are treated promptly, this can prevent cervical cancer in the future. Women who avoid getting screened periodically usually miss the opportunity of detection of any abnormality at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

There are three main ways to screen for cervical cancer:

1. The human papillomavirus (HPV) test checks cells for infection with high-risk HPV types that can cause cervical cancer.

2. The Pap test collects cervical cells so they can be checked for changes caused by HPV that may if left untreated turn into cervical cancer. It can find precancerous cells and cervical cancer cells.

3. The HPV/Pap co-test uses an HPV test and Pap test together to check for both high-risk HPV and cervical cell changes.

Where to get screened for cervical cancer:

Many people receive these tests from their Obstetrician/Genealogist or primary care provider.
If you don't have a primary care provider or doctor you see regularly, you can find a clinic near you that offers cervical cancer screening.

The aim of Cervical Cancer Awareness 2025 is to raise awareness about cervical cancer globally, emphasizing the importance of early detection, prevention, and treatment. This awareness month, observed every January, seeks to educate people about the risks, symptoms, and preventive measures of cervical cancer, which is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
