18 SECRETS OPTOMETRY STUDENTS WILL NEVER TELL YOU.

1. We have to memorise so many new words that will blow off your mind.
Learning how to spell "Quadrantanopia", "Syringomas" and "Keratoacanthoma" is harder than you would think.

2. Optometry Student Syndrome is a very real thing.
Reading about Optics, Instrumentation, Diseases and Drugs(about 200 paged slides) a day, and you will end up thinking you have gotten all of them.

3. You keep telling people around you to have an eye examination, meanwhile you have never had one.

4. Though little we(Optometry Students) know, we cannot help but diagnose everyone around us.

5. When we get something right(when we are able to diagnose a particular disease) in the clinic, we feel on top of the world.

6. What is more annoying than spending money on transportation for Clinical Extenship and not getting paid.

7. Behaving as if you have diagnosed a major case with your instrument in the presence of your Clinical Instructor, meanwhile you don't even know whether you've switched ON the Instrument or not.

8. We always fear about who to use an instrument first for the first time in the presence of a Clinical Instructor.

9. We always want people to wear tinted or photochromic spectacles before walking in the sun.

10. Students will screw over other students in order to climb to the top.
Optometry Students are competitive bunch, which makes every Optometry class challenging.

11. Exams cause every single one of us to melt down. There are too many notes on Optics, Instrumentation, Diseases and Drugs to learn.

12. We have a mini-panic attack every time a Senior Optometrist asks us a question about a case in the Consulting Room.

13. We ask our Patients to eat healthy and have enough rest while we do otherwise.

14. We get stressed out by our Non-Optometry friends graduating, getting married and having kids.....while we're still in school.

15. At some point, we feel we should have been in Medical School.

16. It's very funny when Optometry level 100 students have not even written their first Com Skills Exams but still want to be called Doctors.

17. Optometry Students assess the dressing and cars of their lecturers to measure their future.

18. Optometry Students feel uncomfortable in tie but wear it to be respected.

WHAT MAKES MUSCLES GROW?

I'm sure that most people who have performed some form of resistance training have wanted to increase their muscle mass at one time or another. But the body is just naturally lazy and will only develop enough muscle to deal with the loads placed upon it. So, if you want to develop more muscle, then you better get ready to do some hard work and prepare for slow gains, for the body will only respond to a combination of resistance training, diet and rest.

TWO FORMS OF GROWTH
Muscle growth comes about because of hypertrophy or hyperplasia.
Hypertrophy is an increase in the size of the muscle due to an increase in the size of the muscle fibers, while hyperplasia is an increase in the number of muscle fibers.
Hypertrophy comes in two forms, sarcomere hypertrophy, an increase in the size of the contractile portion of the muscle; and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, an increase in the non-contractile portion of the muscle.
Sarcomere hypertrophy involves a smaller increase in the diameter of the muscle, but muscle density increases. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy shows an increase in muscle diameter and a decrease in density. All hypertrophy will involve both processes; the ratio is dependent on training intensity and frequency.
Heavy training on a regular basis will make you feel solid whereas someone who trains for the pump with light weights will feel soft. If you are interested in improving performance, than strive for sarcomere hypertrophy. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy is only beneficial if an increase in body weight is more important than an improvement in performance.

HYPERPLASIA AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Hyperplasia is the splitting of muscle fibers, resulting eventually in a greater number of fibers the same size as the originals. It has been said that the number of muscle cells one is born with is all they will ever have, and the splitting is not new fibers but damage to existing fibers. Russian sports scientists claimed to find hyperplasia in swimmers' shoulders. Swimming is training at a high speed with low resistance.
Other researchers have produced hyperplasia in chickens and grouse by hanging them by their wings for a few days. I do not know if hyperplasia is possible, but if you want to do a little experiment, I would train at high speed as opposed to hanging yourself in a stretched out position for the weekend.

BREAKING DOWN
The process of muscle growth is not known for sure, but most theories are based on the idea that lifting breaks down the muscle, and growth results from over-compensating to protect the body from future stress. The human body breaks down and rebuilds all of the muscles every 15 to 30 days. Lifting speeds up the process due to an increased need for fuel. Rebuilding peaks 24 to 36 hours after training and continues at increased rates for as much as 72 hours.
The muscle hypoxia theory is that weight training decreases muscle oxygen content, and that triggers protein synthesis. It came from the fact that lifting loads over 60% of maximum temporarily cuts off blood flow. Restricting blood flow with a tourniquet does not result in muscle growth, and pearl divers are not overly muscular, so the muscle hypoxia theory can be thrown out. Another theory is that training increases blood flow and the increased nutrient supply is responsible for growth.
It sounds good, but running increases blood flow and not too many distance runners have big legs. The ATP debt theory is that muscles use ATP contract, so ATP will break down and the waste products will trigger increased blood flow and growth. It has been discounted because ATP levels are the same following exercising to failure as at rest, and runners still do not have big legs.

ENERGETIC THEORY
The energetic theory that is currently the most accepted is that muscle has a certain amount of energy at any given time, for growth, repair, and movement. Soviet sport scientists have referred to this as an individual's current adaptive reserve. Over time, with a lot of hard work, the body becomes more efficient at breaking down and rebuilding muscle, which shows an increase in the current adaptive reserve. Increased energy supply allows more work to be accomplished, followed by increased growth.

TRAINING VOLUME
Medvedyev, the long time Soviet weight lifting coach, wrote that training volume is the determining factor in muscle growth. He recommends that if a weightlifter wants to stay in the same weight class, he should train with singles, and if the lifter is trying to go higher a weight class, he should train with sets of three to six reps.
Anthony Ditullio adds that strict exercise performance, minimal rest between sets, and the volume of work in a limited time are the primary factors in muscle growth. Obviously, the more work performed, the greater need for energy.
A maximum single is the most work that can be performed in an instant, but because it lasts a limited time, only a small amount of protein is broken down. High repetition sets with light weight also require a small amount of fuel supply. Medium repetition sets with maximum weights require a larger fuel supply, resulting in an increased protein breakdown, which leads to a bigger rebound in energy stores and increased muscle growth.

DURING YOUR TRAINING SESSION
Lifting weights is a stress, and to counteract the stress and as part of the super compensation, hormones are released. Growth hormone, insulin, insulin-like growth factor, testosterone and cortisol are the hormones released after or during weight training.
Cortisol breaks carbohydrates down for fuel. Growth hormone, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor work together to inhibit the breakdown of muscle by increasing nutrient flow into the muscle. Growth hormone is released in greater amounts following exercise and controls the release of insulin-like growth factor, which is the primary anabolic hormone. Testosterone stimulates the nervous system to send stronger signals and signals the muscle to rebuild.
Growth hormone, insulin, and insulin-like growth factors are now being used as performance enhancers to increase muscle mass, and even though they are banned substances, they are difficult to detect.

LONG-TERM USE WILL HAVE SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS
Proper nutrition is necessary, most specifically protein! Nutritionists recommend less than one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight or less to maintain health, but more than two to three grams of protein per kilogram have been recommended for weight gain. Protein is used for growth, repair and hormone production. Only twenty to thirty grams of protein can be used at any time except following exercise or fasting; additional protein ends up being stored as fat. This supports eating several small meals throughout the day.
The great Paul Anderson and Doug Hepburn and others famous for their muscle mass put an emphasis on liquid protein because liquid foods are easier to digest in greater quantities. The liquid protein can be consumed during or immediately following exercise. Michael Salvanti, who put a lot of effort into studying what it takes to increase muscle mass, gained twenty pounds in four months, after not gaining any weight in the previous four years, by drinking eight ounces of his protein shake.
Salvanti scheduled his shakes as a part of his training program. Consuming protein and carbohydrates right after lifting has also been shown to increase insulin release and speed up recovery.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STRESS ON THE BODY
BARBELL BENCH PRESS
Research has shown that in order to increase muscle mass, stress must be put on the body, leading to increased hormone release, and increased flow of nutrients into the muscle, and with rest, muscles will grow. If someone asked me what they should do to add some serious amounts of muscle, I would recommend three sets of 8 to 12 reps with all the weight that you can handle for the bench press, bent over rows, combined with a light set of 8x12 reps for full squats, followed by an all out set of 20 in the parallel squat.
I would finish each training session with stretching and cool down, light aerobic work and a large protein added shake. On non-lifting days it is essential that you rest and work out the kinks with a swim, or walk or light bike, but do nothing that involves impact. Best of luck and remember, "luck is when opportunity meets preparation."

13 Reasons Why Doctors Can Never be the Ideal Boyfriend

Women have so many images about the ideal boyfriend. Sweet, caring and fun are just some of those. But your dream-boyfriend image will probably shatter if you end up dating a doctor. Well not all, but most doctors can never be any girl's dream boyfriend. These reasons below will just prove our point better.
1. He will never have any free time, ever!
2. He will always have another woman in his life, apart from his mother. The nurse, of course.
3. Being in a profession that is anti-emotions, do not expect long and emotional conversations.
4. He will never, willingly, take you out for lunches. Obviously, he never recommends unhealthy food.
5. It is possible that his romantic lines will also talk about pills, x-rays, and tests.
6. He is already committed to his work, so commitment with you would be a...?
7. He will have more mood swings than you can never have or even imagine. Obviously, getting good and bad news on the same day can do that to him.
8. Not all your jokes will make him laugh. Come on, they are doctors, hence very intelligent!
9. It is possible that you might have to get an appointment to go on a date with him.
10. It is also possible that he will leave you in between the act, if he gets an emergency call from the hospital.
11. He can never be that oh-so-cool guy you ever wished.
12. It is possible that your room will be filled with files, folders and all those medical books.
13. His favourite accessory is probably his stethoscope and not that ring you gifted him.

1. Bill Cosby's arrest is not a distraction from the non-indictment of murderous police officers. It is the consequence of ra**ng and s*xually assaulting women.
2. The defense of men like Bill Cosby over and against the support of women who are assaulted is why women take years to come forward or never tell anyone about the s*xual assault they've experienced.
3. If people could defend Bill Cosby this rigorously, it's scary to think about the lengths they'd go to defend and cover up the r**e/s*xual violence committed by people they actually know. Because, honestly, it's hard to defend rapists and not be one (or a co-conspirator) yourself.
4. Race, without question, plays a factor in the over representation and prosecution of Black men in the criminal justice system. It is unfair. However, Bill Cosby is not an example of this.
5. Bill Cosby, in his own words from his deposition, admitted to drugging women to have s*x with them and paying them off to keep silent. That's actually illegal any way you look at it.
6. It is an insult to Tamir Rice and any other Black boy/man we have lost to White supremacy to equate them, in any way/shape/form, to Bill Cosby.
7. I'm not ready to throw Cliff Huxtable away and I probably never will be ready to do that or let The Cosby Show go. Still, I know that Cliff and Bill aren't the same person.
8. Anytime an officer kills someone, we automatically know they're guilty. We don't have to wait for evidence or a trial. And we lament when we don't receive justice. Why is it that, when discussing the prosecution of Black men for their crimes against (Black) women, we need to wait for evidence, a person is innocent until proven guilty and faith in the system abounds?
9. We are not hearing about these r**e allegations because Bill Cosby was trying to buy NBC and women didn't just start coming out the woodworks. Women have been yelling that Bill Cosby r**ed them for years and nobody would listen. It took a stand up comic's routine to make us pay attention. R**e had to become a punchline before it could be taken seriously.
10. There are so many Black women who fight for justice and advocate for Black men on daily basis because we love them. The task is for that love to be reciprocated by Black men, even when it means they have to stand beside us and against themselves.
11. The fact that pastors are debating this arrest is precisely how husbands/sons who have violated girls/women in their own families can be church leaders and their wives/mothers who knew about it come to church weekly acting like they didn't help destroy someone's life.
12. Whether it happened 3 hours ago or 30 years ago, whether you've been unapologetic about it or asked forgiveness, if you s*xually assault someone, you should go to jail.

Doctors at Korle Bu threaten strike over threats, abuse from biomedical scientists

Doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have served notice to government of their intention to withdraw all services to protest what they call threats and abuse at the hands of biomedical scientists at the facility.
The doctors claim the biomedical scientists have been threatening them both physically and verbally.
They also accused the biomedical scientists of preventing them from entering and practicing their profession at the various laboratories at the hospital.
Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Justice Yankson in an interview with Joy News said the attitude of the biomedical scientists is ridiculous.
“Laboratory physicians who are doctors and have gone into that specialist area of medical practice ought to be given the freehand to practice their profession.
“They have been in the hospital all this while so we find it a bit preposterous that suddenly biomedical scientists - most of whom were even thought by these same medical doctors who are specialist in laboratory science and have worked in some instances for 20 or more years with the hospital – suddenly these biomedical scientists are saying the lab belongs to them and the doctors have no space at all in that facility,” Dr Yankson said.
The attitude of the biomedical scientists in Dr Yankson’s view is wrong, adding “this is clear impunity.”
He called on the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and government must intervene now or risk severe consequences.
“Our biggest problem is the safety of both life and property of the medical doctors. We are telling the management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as well as the ministry of health that the safety of our members is paramount to us.
“This act of intimidation, threat – both verbal and physical assaults – should cease. We will treat an attack on any single medical doctor in that facility as an attack on the entire medical association and we will have no option than to bring the full force of the association to bear and will include asking our members to cease all services completely”.
The management of the Korle Bu teaching hospital is yet to respond to the GMA’s threat of a strike.

I have personally witnessed an obvious change in the weather. U might have also witnessed it as well. That's good for you. But if you have not then please take note of these important advises.

To help guard your health and protect your life.
The weather is getting cold in the morning
Dry(humid) and hot in the afternoon.
These dramatic changes occurring in the weather poses many health risks and dangers upon us.

And we need to take critical look at them so we don't develop any complications.

As a result of these changes.
People are at a high risk for upper respiratory infections as a result of inhalation of dust
Epistaxis ; bleeding through the nose as a result of humid air that cause blood vessels in the nose to break.

Dehydration due to dry air or humidity
Eye infections like conjunctivitis due to dryness and dust.

Sore throat

Dried skins cracked lips and other lesions
High tendency of bleeding

Poor water hygiene may also occur leading to other gastrointestinal effects like vomiting and diarrhoea.

Preventive measures
Wear protective clothes such as jackets trousers socks and stockings wherever appropriate and necessary

Drink more water at 6 to 8 sachets or more

Use appropriate skin cream , the best I can recommend is Shea butter. Apply them on areas that are prone to dryness like the lips, hair, face heals of the foot etc.

Pls don't expose your body

Do as much as possible to avoid dusty areas. Leaders can help us sprinkle some water at dusty areas.

Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing to prevent spread of infectious micro organisms.

Do as much as possible to prevent any form of injury since this can cause a lot bleeding.

Reduce Strenuous activities the lead to high oxygen demand.

Ensure good personal hygiene.

Take in more fruits and vegetables to help boost immunity

Take enough time to rest

Please let us spread this vital information so we can save lives. Remember prevention is better than to cure.
