The rains go hand-in-hand with planting, rebirth, spring cleaning, detoxifying the body, and sometimes, dis-eases.

One of the plants that have superhero qualities in creating balance and kicking all kinds of diseases to the curb is Neem.

Neem, Azadirachta indica, Indian Lilac, Arista can be found in the tropics but indigenous to India. In Ayurveda, it's considered the king of all medicinal herbs and a wondrous plant.

Neem detoxifies the liver, kidneys, and blood. All parts are used for the treatment of infections, skin diseases, inflammation, and to bolster the immune system.

Use Neem to enhance and calm digestion, eliminate parasites and nausea, lower blood sugar levels, and breathe better.

Plants support the diversity of life. They provide us with food, medicine, clothing, shelter, etc. Without plants, life will not be as we know it.

We rely on plants for our wellbeing because they’re natural and essential to our existance. But, in order to gain the beneficial properties of plants we need to study them and know how to use them.

Many times we hear people say “plants are natural so I can take as much as I want” or “if I take too much nothing will happen”.... Just because they’re natural does not mean they’re harmless. In fact, the very nature of plants and their many uses demands that we use them wisely.

Be intentional and mindful about your use of plants. Know their actions, uses and dosage. Start small and build on them paying particular attention to your body’s reactions and responses to them.

Food is medicine. Herbalism is medicine.🌻

Ocimum gratissimum/African Basil/Scent leaf/Nunum in Twi is used to treat various ailments.

Nunum is an adaptogen and general tonic which protects the heart from stress, stabilizes blood sugar, calms headache and stomach issues, treats fever, malaria, typhoid, and even leucorrhoea (female discharges).

It's used for respiratory issues such as colds, cough, asthma, and nose bleeds. The leaves are used with other herbs for piles.

The dried leaves are burned as a repellent for physical and spiritual bugs.

It is a cooling herb and believed to help with memory, circulation, and bringing joy as well as happiness.

Anytime we mention Abrofo Nkatie/Tropical Almonds (Terminalia catappa) everyone becomes nostalgic and shares stories of their childhood encounters with Abrofo Nkatie.

Guess what? You don't have to scale walls or bother your neighbor to give you some; we have it here already cracked and ready to eat. 😋
Or, you can make nut milk or nkate cake (peanut brittle) with it, or even medicine with it.

Abrofo Nkatie is quite a functional food and medicine: The fruit is great for the teeth and gums, the kernel is great for male reproductive health and the fallen leaves have affinity to the liver.

Infusions of leaves, decoctions and tinctures can be used for Hepatitis, Sickle Cell, HIV, Chemo prevention, Urinary issues, Rheumatoid disease etc.

The tree is an excellent shade tree although some believe it's a meeting place for witches.

Balance. That is what Vitex agnus-castus/ Chaste Tree berries is about. It helps regulate and balance female hormones in teenagers and adults but not the best for men as it inhibits androgens and lowers libido.

Vitex is both a stimulant, relaxant and reproductive tonic. It works well for PMS
and its symptoms such as acne, weight gain, headaches, nausea and moodiness.

It's indicated for menopause, infertility caused by low progesterone, endometriosis, fibroids, and other hormonal issues.

*Contraindicated for pregnancy, breastfeeding, birth control, HRT, Bleeding, estrogen deficiency etc.
