Asthma affects over 260 million people worldwide and is responsible for more than 450,000 deaths annually—most of which are preventable. Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications are essential for managing asthma and preventing life-threatening attacks. However, in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ghana, access to these life-saving treatments remains limited due to availability and cost barriers.

This year's World Asthma Day theme, “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL,” emphasises the urgent need to ensure that everyone, regardless of location or income, can access effective asthma care.

Over 3.5 billion individuals comprise the global labour force, contributing to economies and communities worldwide.

However, 70% of these workers—approximately 2.4 billion people—are at high risk of extreme heat exposure, leading to nearly 23 million workplace injuries and 19,000 deaths annually. ​

Ghana's Workforce Snapshot:

Ghana's labour force was estimated at 13.99 million people in 2022, with over 11.3 million aged 25 years and older.

In 2023, the labour force participation rate stood at 63.4%, reflecting the active engagement of Ghanaians in various sectors. ​

Hypertension led to 2,573 deaths in 2022, making it the top cause of mortality.

Over 34% of adults live with high blood pressure, yet many remain unaware of their condition. Diabetes accounted for 1,578 deaths in the same year. ​

Ghana is making significant strides in the fight against malaria:

- Malaria-related deaths decreased from 151 in 2022 to 146 in 2023.

- The prevalence of malaria in children aged 6 to 59 months declined from 26.7% in 2014 to 8.6% in 2022.

- The Greater Accra Region recorded the lowest malaria prevalence rate at 2.0%.

Despite these improvements, malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Ghana.
