Today, GFD joins the rest of the world to observe World Hearing Day 2026, led by the World Health Organization.

This year’s theme, “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children,” speaks directly to our reality.

Across Ghana, many children with ear and hearing conditions remain undiagnosed. Some sit in classrooms unable to follow lessons. Others are misunderstood as inattentive or slow learners. In rural communities, access to ear and hearing care remains limited. Early screening is not yet routine in many child health and school health programmes.

The campaign calls for two urgent actions:
• Prevent avoidable childhood hearing loss
• Ensure early identification and timely care for children with ear or hearing problems

In Ghana, communities and classrooms offer the most practical entry points. Community health nurses, CHPS compounds, basic schools, and parent teacher associations can drive early detection. If we integrate hearing screening into school health services and strengthen referral pathways to district and regional hospitals, we can reduce preventable hearing loss and improve learning outcomes.

Hearing care is not a luxury. It is a foundation for inclusive education, and child development.
When children hear well, they learn better.
When they learn better, they participate confidently.
When they participate, Ghana moves forward.

Let us invest in prevention, expand access to screening, and ensure that no Ghanaian child is left behind because of an undetected hearing challenge.

At the top is the logo of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations and a ribbon in the colors of the Ghana flag in the top right corner. The background shows a faint world map. At the center is a large ear icon with green sound waves on both sides. Below it, the text reads “MARCH 3RD” and “WORLD HEARING DAY” in bold white letters against a dark red gradient background. Smaller ear icons with sound wave symbols appear on both sides of the word “WORLD.” The message at the bottom says: “Celebrating the advancements in hearing technology and support services. Happy World Hearing Day!”

WCW Engages YAW Partners in Ashanti Region

On February 10, 2026, the We Can Work (WCW) Country Management Unit, together with Entrepreneurship Support Organisation MDF, engaged Young Africa Works (YAW) partners in the Ashanti Region as part of an ongoing scoping exercise to extend the programme to the region.

The team visited the World University Services of Canada (WUSC) under the Activate Project and the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) at Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) to formally introduce the WCW programme, strengthen collaboration, and identify practical areas of alignment.

At WUSC, discussions focused on how WCW could leverage the Activate Project, an ATVET initiative, to connect with relevant hubs that can support the WCW AgriTrack. The meeting with the Zonal Coordinator for the Middle Belt and members of the Activate team explored concrete pathways for partnership.

At KTI, the team gained deeper insight into the DTI project and its three-partner structure. Given KTI’s role in providing internship and work placement opportunities for learners, discussions centered on how this model could complement the WCW Technical Skilling Track.

The engagements were productive and forward-looking. Both partners expressed interest in building synergies that will expand opportunities for WCW Academy learners in the Ashanti Region.

The We Can Work Programme is implemented in Ghana by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) in partnership with Light for the World, African Disability Forum and the Mastercard Foundation.
