You will hear people throw around the term sarcopenia a lot. Seems like a fairly simple concept: lack of muscle. It turns out it's a little bit more complicated. It is not just a lack of muscle, but also a restructuring of the muscle and loss of function. This makes it a little bit more difficult to test for. I would also state that I'm not sure what we consider normal is actually normal. We expect a loss of muscle overtime, but is that actually normal?

The problem I see with the way we approach sarcopenia Is that we somehow believe that this is almost solely a protein phenomena. By most studies, we suffer more sarcopenia than other countries and yet we have the highest rate of protein, and specifically animal protein, consumption.

As we age, we do tend to eat less protein, but we also tend to move less. I think a few people would argue that the key to preventing sarcopenia is movement and resistance training. The old saying "move it or lose it" could not be more true. An adequate diet with daily activity that involves resistance should do a phenomenal job at blunting and possibly preventing the development of sarcopenia.
The real problem I see is the thought that excessive doses of protein are the answer. Multiple studies have shown that protein without resistance training is not particularly effective. In addition, more is not necessarily better. In fact, when you look at the different aging pathways, from IGF1 to mTOR, they are actually driven by protein. In other words, excess protein may paradoxically lead to aging.

Do we need protein? Yes. Does it have to be animal protein? No! Do we need high doses of protein similar to a bodybuilder? Absolutely not. There is debate over the RDA levels of protein, but I still believe that they are adequate when combined with resistance training to maintain muscle mass and grow muscle. Possibly as we get over 65 we may need a bit more, possibly 1 g per kilogram. But I do not see a need for trying to get 1.6 g per kilogram when the difference in muscle between one and 1.6 is so small. Aging science is still in its infancy but excess protein is certainly a culprit for aging. More may not be better.
