🎗️ October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Let's Talk About Early Detection. 🎗️
Breast cancer is a disease that affects millions worldwide, and early detection is our most powerful weapon against it. This October, as we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Baiden Ghartey Hospital is dedicated to empowering our community with knowledge and accessible healthcare.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow out of control. It can begin in different parts of the breast, most commonly in the milk ducts or the lobules that produce milk. Both men and women can get breast cancer, though it is far more common in women.
Why is Awareness So Important?
Awareness saves lives! Knowing the signs and symptoms, understanding your risk factors, and committing to regular screenings can lead to early diagnosis and significantly improve treatment outcomes. When breast cancer is found early, while it is small and has not spread, the chances of successful treatment are much higher.
Know Your Breasts: What to Look For 👀
Regular self-exams are crucial. While not a substitute for professional screening, being familiar with your breasts can help you notice changes. Here are some common signs and symptoms to look out for:
A new lump or mass (which may be painless)
Swelling of all or part of the breast
Skin irritation or dimpling
Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward
Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
Nipple discharge other than breast milk
Any change in the size or the shape of the breast
Pain in any area of the breast
If you notice any of these changes, please don't hesitate to seek medical attention.
Early Detection Methods 🩺
At Baiden Ghartey Hospital, we emphasize a multi-faceted approach to early detection:
Clinical Breast Exams (CBE): A physical examination of your breasts by a healthcare professional.
Mammograms: An X-ray of the breast that can often detect breast cancer before a lump can be felt. This is the most effective screening tool for women aged 40 and above, or earlier if you have specific risk factors.
Breast Ultrasound & MRI: These may be used as supplementary tools, especially for women with dense breast tissue or those at high risk.
Spread the Word! 🗣️
Talk to your loved ones about breast cancer awareness. Encourage the women (and men!) in your life to schedule their regular screenings. A simple conversation could save a life.
