KOFIH Donates State-of-the-Art Laparoscopic Equipment to CCTH.
The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), dedicated to enhancing global healthcare by supporting partner countries, has equipped the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) with a substantial quantity of advanced laparoscopic surgery equipment for its inaugural surgeries on five individuals.
With the support from the Community Chest of Korea, a Non-Governmental Organization, the equipment included Kalr storz, a laparoscopic tower, capacity monitor, screens, processors, light source, insufflator, and diathermy machines.
This benevolent act followed months of comprehensive training on laparoscopic equipment and surgeries for doctors, nurses, and biomedical engineers.
The training sessions emphasized fundamental concepts of laparoscopic surgeries, equipment operation and surgical procedures.
Since 2013, KOFIH has actively engaged in various projects across the country, including maternal and child health initiatives, medical device management, rehabilitation programs for children with disabilities, and enhancing laparoscopic surgery capabilities. The organization has organized invitational training programs through the Dr. LEE Jong-Wook Fellowship program in Korea for healthcare professionals.
Laparoscopic surgeries are minimally invasive surgical procedures used to examine and treat conditions primarily in the abdomen or pelvis. It involves small incisions (0.5โ1.5 cm) through which a laparoscopeโa thin tube with a cameraโis inserted, allowing real-time visualization of internal organs on a monitor.
This technique can diagnose health conditions such as abdominal pain, tumors, and organ diseases, and enables interventions like the removal of a small tissue sample from the body for examination under a microscope (biopsies). Generally, this process reduces pain, shortens recovery time, and minimizes scarring compared to traditional open surgery, notwithstanding rare risks such as bleeding, infection, and potential organ damage.
During the equipment handover, Mr. Bomin Yang, KOFIH Ghana Country Representative, emphasized the significance of this gesture, marking a substantial step in augmenting the surgical capacity of the facility to enhance healthcare standards. He underscored the transformative impact of laparoscopic surgery on modern medicine, expressing his hope that this state-of-the-art equipment will not only elevate the quality of medical services but also enhance the expertise of healthcare professionals at CCTH.
He expressed his gratitude to the hospital leadership and staff for their unwavering dedication to patient care and their ongoing partnership.
Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, while appealing for increased support, assured of his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable enhancements in healthcare delivery.
He elaborated that in January 2024, KOFIH entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with CCTH to bolster the hospitalโs capacity to provide high-quality medical services. Specifically, the aim was to enhance the capability for laparoscopic surgery to improve operational efficiency and optimize patient bed management, thereby reducing hospital stays. Furthermore, KOFIH facilitated comprehensive training for healthcare professionals at CCTH.
