On Wednesday 25th October 2023, Mrs. Patricia Assabil, an esteemed Ear, Nose and Throat (E.N.T) specialist from the E.N.T unit of the U.C.C Hospital, delivered an informative and engaging presentation on the topic of Otomycosis during our regular Wednesday clinical presentations.

Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external ear canal. It leads to symptoms like itching, ear pain, hearing loss, and discharge. Fungi, such as Aspergillus and Candida, can cause this condition, often in moist and humid ear canals. Diagnosis involves a clinical examination, and treatment typically includes antifungal eardrops and sometimes cleaning of the ear. Preventative measures, like keeping the ear dry, are essential to reduce the risk of otomycosis. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications. Consult an E.N.T specialist if you suspect an ear infection.

On Wednesday 26th June 2023, the Maternity Ward, represented by Ms. Vincentia Mensah, presented on PLACENTAL ABRUPTION (abruptio placentae) during our regular Wednesday Clinical Presentations.

Placental abruption is a serious condition during pregnancy where the placenta detaches from the uterus before delivery. It can cause vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, and fetal distress. Risk factors include high blood pressure, trauma, and smoking. Complications may include maternal hemorrhage, preterm birth, and developmental issues in the baby. Immediate medical attention is crucial, and treatment may involve monitoring, managing bleeding, or delivering the baby early via C-section if necessary.

Prevention:
The risk of placental abruption can be reduced by maintaining a good diet including taking folate, regular sleep patterns and correction of pregnancy-induced hypertension.

If you suspect you or someone else is experiencing signs of placental abruption, seek immediate medical help to ensure the best possible outcome for both the mother and the baby.
