Communicating with Compassion: Breaking Bad News in Healthcare

At this week’s Clinical Presentation Meeting, Dr. Nana Esi Kwofie delivered an insightful presentation on “Breaking Bad News” — a vital communication skill in medical practice.

The session explored what constitutes bad news, why delivering it is often challenging, and the importance of doing so with empathy, clarity, and professionalism. Key frameworks such as the ABCDE approach and the SPIKES model were highlighted to guide healthcare professionals in preparing adequately, communicating compassionately, managing emotional reactions, and developing patient-centered care plans.

The presentation reinforced a powerful reminder: patients may forget the exact words spoken, but they will never forget how they were made to feel in their most vulnerable moments.

At UCC Hospital, we remain committed to strengthening both our clinical expertise and our compassionate care.
