In neurology, we often talk about slowing progression and managing symptoms. But sometimes, we are gifted with a moment that reminds us exactly why we do this work.
Last weekend, I received a video that filled my heart with joy. It was (Mr. Kofi-name witheld), a patient I've walked with for 8 years on his Parkinson's journey, dancing at his granddaughter's wedding.
There he was, smiling broadly, moving with a grace we once thought was lost, surrounded by his cheering family. This was more than a dance; it was a triumph.
This moment was made possible not by a miracle drug but by the power of dedicated, collaborative care from our Parkinson's disease nurse, the physiotherapist who worked with him on his balance and movement;
the pharmacist who ensured his levodopa and other medications were available and (Mr. Kofi) himself, for his unwavering spirit and determination.
In Ghana, where the odds can feel stacked against us, this is what victory looks like. It’s not just about lab results or scan reports. It’s about quality of life. It’s about preserving dignity, joy, and precious life moments.
At ANIDASO PARKINSONS DISEASE FOUNDATION, we are building a system where stories like Kofi’s are not rare exceptions but a common reality. Every day, our team is working to create more of these moments for patients and families across the country.
This work is hard, but it is filled with moments of profound beauty. It’s a reminder that with compassion, collaboration, and persistence, we can help people not just live with neurological disease but live fully.
