KATH takes life-changing free gynaecological surgeries to the Bono East Region
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG), in association with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has successfully carried out a major gynaecological surgical outreach programme to two leading hospitals in the Bono East Region, bringing relief and renewed hope to dozens of women.
The outreach, held simultaneously at the Atebubu and Kintampo District Hospitals, began with the arrival of both SOGOG and KATH medical teams on Thursday for pre-surgical assessments and preparations. Surgeries officially commenced on Friday, 20th March, and concluded on Saturday, 21st March 2026.
Over the two-day surgical exercise, approximately 55 women suffering from various gynaecological conditions underwent successful procedures, completely free of charge.
The procedures carried out included 26 myomectomies, 18 hysterectomies, 14 abdominal and 4 vaginal, and 3 cystectomies. In addition, the team provided specialist consultations for selected patients and performed minor procedures, including two endometrial and cervical biopsies.
Leading this outreach was Dr. Rex Djokoto, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate of KATH.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Djokoto emphasised the importance of such outreaches in addressing unmet healthcare needs in underserved areas. He noted that many of these conditions, if left unattended, could significantly affect the quality of life and overall well-being of patients.
Dr. Baafuor Opoku, SOGOG , organizing secretary and the chief resident who championed involvement of residents, KATH, added that the collaboration strengthened ties between the teaching hospital and district facilities, helping to build local capacity through knowledge sharing.
Also lending support on the ground was Dr. Osman Abdullah Musah, Medical Superintendent at the Atebubu Government Hospital, who expressed profound gratitude to SOGOG, KATH and all partners for bringing specialist care directly to the people.
For many of the beneficiaries, the outreach was nothing short of life-changing. Several women shared emotional accounts of enduring years of discomfort, pain, and financial hardship that prevented them from seeking treatment. The opportunity to receive free, high-quality surgical care brought not only physical relief but also renewed confidence and dignity.
Tears of joy, gratitude, and relief were evident as patients and their families expressed heartfelt appreciation to the medical team, with many describing the intervention as a “second chance at life.”
This outreach forms part of SOGOG and KATH’s broader strategy to reach vulnerable populations in hard-to-reach areas.
As the hospital celebrates its 70th anniversary, the outreach further reinforces KATH’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence and a leader in advancing accessible specialist healthcare in the northern part of the country and beyond. The hospital remains committed to bridging gaps in specialist care and transforming lives across the country through outreaches to underserved communities in Ghana.
Among members of the outreach team were Dr. Alex Aning-Bonsu, Dr Andrew Vormawor, Dr. Kwabena Achamfour Ababio, Dr. Ofosu Baaku, Dr Heindal Senayah, and Dr Enoch Obeng Arthur.
Others were Dr Naab Tembila, Dr Richmond Amo, Dr Bernard Kodwo Nkum, Dr Rosetta Offei, Dr Dominic Abagre, Dr Angela Banahene, Dr. Fred Fongang, Dr DanBeck Powell, Dr. Ellen Gamelie, Dr Nicholas Opoku Osei, Dr John Arthur, Dr Raymond Addo, Dr Collins Owusu, Dr Emmanuel Asagzyire, Dr Derrick Jonfiah, Dr Lawrence Bonnah Junior, Stephen Boadu, Dr Emmanuel Donkor and Dr Huldah Twumasi.
The rest are Dr Daniel Okine, Dr Debora Danso, Dr Andrew Turkson, Regina Odei (Midwife), Faustina Adu Gyamfi (Midwife), and Mrs. Vasty Serwaa Adu-Minta (Midwife).
All surgical equipment and medical consumables used during the outreach were generously donated to the team, ensuring that beneficiaries received comprehensive care at no cost.

Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives inducts 552 specialists, expands training programmes Dr. Mrs. Achempim-Ansong
The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives has inducted 552 nurses and midwives into its specialist training programmes, marking a new phase in the development of advanced nursing and midwifery practice in Ghana.

The Induction Ceremony, held on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th March 2026 at the R. S. Amegashie Auditorium of the University of Ghana Business School in Accra, also witnessed the induction of the first batch of Fellows admitted through examination.

Addressing the gathering, the Rector of the College, Dr. Mrs. Gloria Achempim-Ansong said the institution continues to expand specialist training to strengthen the country’s health workforce and improve healthcare delivery.

According to her, the College began its operations with eight programmes and 30 residents across three teaching hospitals. It now runs 22 programmes with about 1,413 residents enrolled across different levels of training.

These programmes include continuous professional development courses, a one-year Associate Membership programme, a three-year Membership programme and a two-year Fellowship programme.
The training programmes are offered under the nursing, midwifery, mental health and public health nursing divisions.

Dr. Mrs. Achempim-Ansong said the College has also expanded its operations across three zones covering the southern, middle and northern parts of the country, with training sites in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Techiman, Koforidua, Ho and Agogo.

Currently, the College works with 65 accredited training centres and more than 100 education team members drawn from Teaching Hospitals, Regional and District Hospitals, as well as privately owned Specialist Facilities.

She said graduates of the College have continued to contribute to improved health outcomes across the country.

The ceremony also marked a major milestone with the induction of the first group of Fellows admitted through examination.

The fellowship programme, introduced during the 2022 to 2023 academic year, aims to prepare experienced members to serve as senior specialists and faculty members for the College.

According to her, four cohorts have so far been admitted into the fellowship programme, with senior residents from the first two cohorts now being inducted after completing the required training and assessments.

Out of the 552 inductees for the two-day ceremony, 11 were admitted as Fellows and one as a Member. The rest were inducted at the Associate Membership level in various specialist areas.
These areas include paediatric oncology nursing, peri operative nursing, critical care nursing, ophthalmic nursing, public health nursing, ear nose and throat nursing, emergency nursing and specialist public health nursing.

Dr. Mrs. Achempim-Ansong said the College continues to collaborate with several international partners to strengthen training and research.

Among these partners are The Hospital for Sick Children in Canada, which is working with the College on the Increase Gains in Nutrition by Integration, Education, Evaluation and Empowerment project aimed at improving adolescent health and nutrition.

Other partners include World Child Cancer, which supports training in paediatric oncology and palliative nursing, the Ghanaian-Diaspora Nurses Alliance, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which assists with capacity building.

She also mentioned support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for the training of residents.

The College has also introduced a Top Up pathway in collaboration with post basic training institutions. Since 2023, the initiative has brought 2,951 post basic nurses into the College as Associate Members, giving them the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications and specialise in their respective fields.

Despite the progress, the Rector said the College continues to face challenges, particularly the lack of sponsorship for residency training programmes.

Specialist training, according to the Rector, remains expensive for many residents, while the increasing migration of nurses and midwives is affecting enrolment and programme completion.
She therefore appealed for increased funding support, improved study leave arrangements and policies that encourage nurses and midwives to pursue specialist training.

The College also appealed to the Ministry of Health (Ghana) to support the construction of a permanent office complex on a two-acre land allocated to the institution at the University of Ghana.
Currently, the College operates from office space at the Health Training Institutions Unit building provided by the Ministry.

She expressed appreciation to key stakeholders including the Ghana Health Service and the Christian Health Association of Ghana for granting nurses and midwives study leave with pay to pursue specialist training.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana was also commended for supporting the College with facilities, financial assistance and information technology resources.

she said the College remains committed to expanding specialist programmes, strengthening faculty through fellowship training and deepening both local and international partnerships to position the institution as a centre of excellence in specialist nursing and midwifery education in Africa.
