GEM-H Hosts Greater Accra’s Regional Celebration of World Mental Health Day 2025

Kwabenya, October 10, 2025 — The Ga East Municipal Hospital (GEM-H) was alive with purpose and compassion as it hosted this year’s World Mental Health Day celebration for the Greater Accra Region. Organized by the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate (GARHD) of the Ghana Health Service, the event gathered health professionals, mental health advocates, students, media practitioners, and community members under the global theme:
“Access to Service – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”

The day’s activities highlighted the urgent need to strengthen mental health systems and psychosocial support, particularly in times of crisis such as pandemics, natural disasters, and other emergencies that heighten anxiety, depression, and trauma among individuals and families.

Participants benefited from free health screenings, mental health education, patient engagement sessions, and an interactive stakeholder dialogue focused on improving access to mental health care across the region. Various organizations also showcased their work through exhibitions promoting mental wellness and support services.

In his keynote message, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Robert Amesiya, reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to mental health care for all. “Mental health is integral to overall well-being,” Dr. Amesiya emphasized. “We must continue to build systems that support resilience and recovery, especially during emergencies when people are most vulnerable.”

The Medical Superintendent of Ga East Municipal Hospital, Dr. Ayuba Seidu Abdulai, expressed gratitude to the Regional Health Directorate for selecting GEM-H as the host facility, noting that the hospital remains dedicated to advancing mental health care delivery and community engagements. Dr. Abdulai said. “We are proud to be part of this national effort to break stigma and promote access to quality mental health services.”

As the event drew to a close, the message was clear — there is no health without mental health. The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate and the Ga East Municipal Hospital pledged to continue collaborating with partners to expand access, raise awareness, and build a more resilient and mentally healthy society.
