Every time I hear debates about “no beds” and "ambulances not working", my chest tightens… because for some of us, this is not politics or social media talk. It is trauma!

On Wednesday, January 26, 2022, one of my sons developed serious breathing difficulties. He was literally surviving on a machine. A hospital at North Legon looked at us and said the words no parent ever wants to hear:
“Move him immediately to a tertiary hospital.”

Then reality hit.

We had two challenges at the same time: No bed… and no ambulance.

We called everywhere. Korle Bu — no bed. 37 — no bed. And you quickly understand something about our healthcare system: when a child is struggling to breathe, you don’t have time for procedures, bureaucracy or referrals. Minutes feel like sand slipping through your fingers.

By God’s grace, Oheneyere Naana Dansoa helped us secure a bed at the Children’s Hospital, and Ridge later confirmed space at their ER. But even then, nothing was guaranteed. You live in constant fear that by the time you arrive, someone else may have taken the bed.

Then the Ambulance team arrived.

Before we moved, I was quietly advised to follow the ambulance behind in my own car, not for comfort, but to make sure I was physically there to secure the bed when they got there. That’s the level of uncertainty families go through.

That 4-minute drive from North Legon to Ridge, in rush hour traffic, is still one of the longest journeys of my life. Siren screaming. Heart pounding. Praying. Watching a child you cannot help… and knowing all you need is a bed and oxygen.

So today, when you see a car closely following an ambulance, please don’t insult them. Don’t block them. Don’t assume they are tailgating to avoid traffic.

Sometimes that car is carrying a father… a mother… a relative… racing against death, trying to secure a bed before it disappears.

God bless the Ghana Ambulance Service. That wonderful team from Madina constituency and the health professionals at Ridge Hospital.

Plans Underway to Establish Ambulance Station at Takoradi Airport

In a significant step towards enhancing emergency medical services and optimizing response times, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) is actively pursuing the establishment of new ambulance stations in strategic locations across the country. As part of this crucial initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of NAS, accompanied by key management members and regional leadership from the Western Region, recently engaged in productive discussions with the Takoradi Airport Base Commander and his team.

The primary objective of this meeting was to explore the feasibility of establishing a dedicated ambulance station at Takoradi Airport. The discussions comprehensively covered essential aspects, including the provision of suitable office space to ensure a fully operational 24-hour presence for the ambulance crew, aligning seamlessly with the government's 24-hour economic agenda.

Importance of an Ambulance Station at Takoradi Airport:
The establishment of an ambulance station at Takoradi Airport offers several compelling advantages, significantly boosting emergency preparedness and community well-being:

Rapid Response to Aviation Incidents:
Airports, by their nature, carry inherent risks, and an on-site ambulance station ensures immediate medical attention in the event of an aircraft emergency, accident, or any health crisis involving passengers or crew. This drastically reduces critical response times, which can be life-saving.

Enhanced Passenger and Staff Safety: With a constant flow of travelers and airport personnel, having dedicated medical support readily available provides a heightened sense of security. It means quicker aid for medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, or injuries that could occur within the airport premises.

Support for Surrounding Communities:
The airport often serves as a central hub, and an ambulance station located there can also provide crucial backup and support to the surrounding communities, especially those in peri-urban areas that might otherwise experience longer ambulance wait times.

Facilitation of Medical Evacuations: For critical cases requiring urgent transfer to advanced medical facilities, an airport-based ambulance can swiftly coordinate with air medical services, ensuring seamless patient transfer from ground to air transport without delay.

-Strategic Hub for Regional Emergency Services:
Positioning an ambulance station at Takoradi Airport can create a strategic hub, allowing for more efficient deployment and coordination of emergency resources across the wider Western Region, particularly given its crucial role in the oil and gas industry.

Alignment with National Health and Safety Standards:
This initiative demonstrates a proactive commitment to meeting and exceeding national and international health and safety standards for critical infrastructure like airports, bolstering public confidence.

A roadmap, complete with specific timelines, is now set to be developed to ensure the swift and successful realization of this vital ambulance station. This initiative underscores NAS's dedication to optimizing emergency medical care and securing the health and safety of both the traveling public and the broader community.
