You must carry out a genetic screening before you move forward. Many genetic disorders can be screened for but the commonest in black Africa is the sickle-cell disorder.

How do genetic tests work?

Many genetic disorders happen when someone has two bad copies of a gene, one from each parent. If you have only one faulty copy, you won't have symptoms of the condition, but you are a "carrier" for it. Your baby will be born with the disorder only if both you and your partner pass the bad gene to them.

The idea behind genetic screening is to know if you and your partner are carriers. This means both of you have one bad copy of the gene. Usually, because there are no symptoms, we assume everything is OK but then it shows up in our kids. This condition is very painful to the child and stands in the way of his/her normal growth and development. It also puts financial and emotional pressure on parents over intense hospitalisation.

I had my Hepatitis B vaccination in 2014 and at the time I didn't know much about the condition, so I did what an ignorant person would do -nothing.

In 2018, I decided to check my profile, thankfully the vaccine had worked for me.

Even though the hep B vaccine is very effective, there are instances where it doesn't work for people. Usually due to handling and human errors.

What do you do after vaccination?

Now, here are some misconceptions about Hep B vaccines... Many of those who administer the doses do not have adequate knowledge about it which results in some of these misconceptions...

1. If you take the first dose and miss the second you'd have to start all over again.

No. You don't, you just schedule for the second shot when you are ready. Or any other shot for that matter.

The first shot can be given at any time. The second dose should be given at least one month after the first shot, and the third and final dose should be separated from dose 2 by at least two months and dose 1 by at least 4 months.

While there is a minimum amount of time required between doses, there is no maximum amount of time. If you miss your second or third shot, you do not have to start the series over again; you can pick up where you left off!

2. Get a booster dose after 10 years of vaccination.

No. Hep B vaccination is for life. Once you check your anti-HBs titer and it is greater than 10 mIU/mL, you are protected against Hepatitis B for life.

A client was worried, he had checked his genotype back in school and it was "AC", knowing that marrying just anyone blindly can result in a child with haemoglobin SC disease. He dated this girl and believed he was in love with her. After a call with him, I encouraged him to have a couple compatibility check with her, at least for the haemoglobin phenotype.

Chlamydia is an infection that can cause a disease known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which is known for causing ectopic pregnancies. In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg doesn’t attach to the uterus. Instead, it may attach to the fallopian tube, abdominal cavity, or cervix.
