🩸 Let’s Talk About Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)

Sickle Cell is a blood condition that affects how red blood cells work. Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, but with SCD, they become shaped like a sickle or banana 🍌 — making it hard for blood to flow smoothly.

🧬 It’s inherited — meaning you get it from your parents. For a child to have it, both parents must carry the sickle cell gene (like AS, AC, etc.).

🌍 Over 80% of cases are found in Africa and tropical regions. That’s because having the trait (AS/AC) gives some protection against malaria — so it’s more common here.

⚠️ What Sickle Cell Can Cause:
• Severe pain (called crises)
• Anaemia (low blood)
• Stroke
• Organ damage (liver, spleen, etc.)
• Bone and joint issues
• For men: a painful er****on called priapism that needs urgent care

💊 Can You Live Long with SCD?
Yes! With proper care, regular checkups, and good treatment, people with sickle cell can live long, full lives. It is not true that they can’t live past 21 — that’s a cruel myth. 👎

🧪 Is There a Cure?
Not a general one yet. Bone marrow transplant can help some children, but it’s costly and hard to access. The disease is manageable, though.

Know your genotype first!

🚫 If both partners are AS, AC, or carry sickle traits, it’s risky to have children. Every child has a 25% chance of getting sickle cell, and all your kids could be affected.

❤️ It’s okay to love someone with AS — just plan wisely before having kids. Don’t gamble with your future children’s health.
