NHIA CEO VISITS HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC HOSPITAL-TECHIMAN, PLEDGES STRONGER COLLABORATION AND POLICY REFORMS

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Holy Family Catholic Hospital-Techiman had the honour of welcoming a high-powered delegation from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Bampoe. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen existing collaboration and explore new opportunities for partnership in delivering quality healthcare.

During the visit, the delegation toured key service areas, including the Outpatient Department (OPD), Emergency Unit, and Obstetrics and Gynecology Department (OBGY). Hospital management used the occasion to commend the NHIA for its significant contributions to the health sector, particularly in providing financial protection to patients over the years.

The visit also served as an opportunity for the hospital to present pressing challenges that require urgent policy attention. Key among these was concerns about emergency treatment of Road Traffic Accident (RTA) patients and the lack of policy on cost recovery by the NHIA. Management also highlighted the need for regular tariff reviews to reflect economic realities. In addition, they advocated for the inclusion of other cancer-related conditions—especially prostate cancer and diagnostic services on breast cancer—under the NHIS benefit package, to prevent late-stage diagnoses and complications.

In his address, Dr. Bampoe commended Holy Family Catholic Hospital-Techiman for its high standards of healthcare delivery and its impactful contributions to their subscribers and the community. He acknowledged the challenges outlined by the hospital and pledged the Authority’s commitment to addressing them. He further emphasized the need for improvements in key policy areas to enhance healthcare outcomes nationwide.

Dr. Bampoe also outlined steps being taken by the Ministry of Finance to provide support to the Authority in terms of timely release of funds for reimbursement to ensure quality and sustainable service delivery. He highlighted the proposed Mahama Cares Policy, which aims to expand coverage to include non-communicable diseases such as stroke, cardiovascular conditions, kidney failure conditions etc.

In conclusion, the NHIA CEO reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage for all Ghanaians and stressed the importance of sustained collaboration with healthcare providers to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare across the country.
