The Relaxation Response

The human body is beautifully designed and balanced. Just as we have the ability to trigger a stress reaction when we feel threatened we also have hard-wired into our nervous system, an opposite physiological state of total relaxation.
The relaxation response is the mirror image opposite of the 'fight or flight response' reaction. When we are stressed our heart rate speeds up, blood pressure rises, breathing gets faster, muscles tense etc. In a relaxation state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases, breathing gets slower and deeper and your muscles relax.
However, unlike the stress reaction which is involuntary and happens automatically, the relaxation response has to be brought on. This means we have to choose to become relaxed in order for it to happen. Fortunately there are many ways to do this and can be done through deep breathing, meditation, yoga, hypnosis, visualization and others.

In the relaxation response unlike sleep, the body is fully relaxed but the mind is awake and under conscious control. The goal is to empty the mind of thoughts and concerns. To prevent distracting concentrate on your breathing, on a calming music or a mantra.

Relaxation exercises should be done in a quiet, comfortable environment. You can sit or lie down. For maximum effect you should practice 15/20 minutes daily but you can also use the techniques as needed before an exam, presentation, job interview etc.

These last 3 weeks has been a real challenge for me. On November 1st I set my mind to carry out a campaign to raise the profile of stress awareness in Gibraltar. I am extremely proud of everyone that has been part of it...big thank you to the Companies that took part as well as to all those individuals who came to my workshops especially Lu-ann Parody and Tamara Borg for sharing their experiences with stress and anxiety on tv. I hope one day soon people will be able to speak up and speak about stress and other mental health issues openly without being ashamed or worried. Already excited for next year 😊
