What is Occupational Health and Why is it important?

Occupational health is a branch of medicine and public health that aims to promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations.

Ensuring the health and safety of employees in the workplace is crucial for both individuals and organisations.

There are a number of facets to the practice and delivery of an effective Occupational Health service:

🔹 Safety First: Occupational health ensures a safe working environment by identifying and minimizing hazards like chemicals, noise, and ergonomic risks. It's all about protecting a company’s most important asset – its work force.

🔹 Promoting Well-being: healthy employees are happy employees! Occupational health aims to promote overall well-being, offering health education, screening, and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.

🔹 Disease Prevention: Occupational health focuses on managing exposure to harmful substances and preventing occupational diseases.

🔹 Boosting Productivity: Investing in occupational health is investing in success! A safe and supportive work environment enhances morale, job satisfaction, and productivity.

🔹 Legal & Ethical Obligations: Employers must ensure they meet legal requirements of health and safety while also upholding ethical values.

🔹 Cost Reduction: Occupational health saves money! By preventing injuries and illnesses businesses will save on healthcare costs and the costs of absenteeism and presenteeism while creating a thriving work culture.

Calling all Health and Emergency Service Workers!
Prioritize Your Health! Get Vaccinated Against Hepatitis B.
Attention all heroes on the front lines of healthcare and emergency services! Your safety is paramount, and we're here to remind you of a critical step you can take to protect yourself: the Hepatitis B vaccine.
The Hepatitis B vaccine is a crucial shield against this dangerous viral infection, especially for those working tirelessly to save lives. Here's why it's vital for you, our dedicated health and emergency service workers:
Personal Protection: As you tirelessly serve others, it's essential to prioritize your health. The Hepatitis B vaccine offers robust protection, strengthening your immune system against this potentially life-threatening disease.
Workplace Safety: By getting vaccinated, you reduce the risk of contracting and spreading Hepatitis B within your workplace. This not only safeguards you but also helps maintain a healthy and resilient workforce, ready to face any challenge.
Enhanced Patient Care: When you're protected, you can provide care with confidence and peace of mind. By taking proactive measures to safeguard your health, you're ensuring the highest standards of safety for both you and the individuals you serve.
Did you know? Many healthcare facilities and emergency service organizations recommend or require Hepatitis B vaccination for their employees. By getting vaccinated, you contribute to a culture of safety and help establish a protective shield for everyone involved.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, so OHS wanted to take a moment to talk about something important that affects many of us: anxiety at the workplace.
Work can sometimes be overwhelming, and it's okay to acknowledge that anxiety can creep in, even in the most productive environments. Remember, you're not alone in this journey! Here are a few things to keep in mind if you're dealing with work-related anxiety:

1️⃣ Take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's okay to feel anxious. Emotions are a normal part of life and acknowledging them is the first step towards managing them effectively.

2️⃣ Reach out to your trusted colleagues or a supportive friend to share your feelings. Sometimes just talking can help you gain perspective.

3️⃣ Don't hesitate to communicate your concerns with your supervisor or manager. They may be able to provide guidance, make adjustments, or offer support. Remember, they want you to succeed!

4️⃣ Prioritize self-care and set boundaries. Take breaks, engage in activities that help you relax, and make time for hobbies or interests outside of work.

5️⃣ Consider seeking professional help if your anxiety persists and starts affecting your daily life.

Your mental health matters so don't hesitate to prioritize it.
