Last night I listened to my body and the science and when feeling sleepy at 9:30, rather than ‘pushing through’ the tiredness as I often do, I turned the lights off, and went to sleep. Having a young child and an evening teaching schedule, I find it hard to go to bed early as I enjoy the evenings for some ‘me time’. But last night I followed Dr Sachin Panda’s advice and had an early night. The result was one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in ages and this morning I have woken up feeling refreshed.
Dr Panda explains that exactly when we eat, sleep, exercise and work is much more crucial to our wellbeing than we ever thought before. When we live in harmony with our bodies natural rhythms, our circadian codes, we can transform our health. The first step to achieving this is through getting enough quality sleep and at the right time 💤

So I don’t usually practice yoga on boats but I couldn’t resist that photo op 🤣. On a more serious note though, getting on the water on a beautiful still day is one of my favourite ways to disconnect from the busyness of everyday life. Taking the time out and experiencing the expansiveness of the sea really helps me to put everything into perspective and recharge. Stress is often unavoidable but we can take steps to manage it. There’s nothing like the calming nature of the sea on a still day. Nature truly is medicine. Where in your life do you create stillness? What practices do you implement in your day to day life to combat the effects of stress?

YOGA- Strength from the inside out. The Vagus Nerve is responsible for calming the nervous system, promoting a feeling of wellbeing and a healthy functioning of the body. Scientific studies have shown that individuals with a high vagal tone deal well with the stressors they encounter in life, whereas those with poor vagal tone do not fair so well. Many of the conditions that are common today, from poor digestion, disturbed sleep, type 2 diabetes to anxiety and depression are somehow related to stress. We can’t always control the stressors that we experience in life, but thankfully, we can control the way we respond to them. The practice of yoga, not only promotes a strong body, but with its postures and focus on the breath it also strengthens vagal tone and improves our resilience to stress.

Join me on the mat to experience the way yoga can help you cope with stress in your life.
