BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL
WHY BRITAIN WONT PRESCRIBE CANNABIS BASED MEDICINE

There are a series of distinct barriers to prescribing medical cannabis that need to be overcome in order to improve patient access in the UK.

Concerns about the perceived lack of randomised controlled trial evidence are misplaced as many patient-centred approaches including patient-reported outcomes, pharmacoepidemiology and n=1 trials can be applied.

Thousands of UK patients self-medicating with illicit cannabis-based products for medicinal use and the international database evidence suggest this new class of drugs offers a significant advance in treatment for many in whom current medicines are either ineffective or poorly tolerated.

We hope that this paper will help policymakers and prescribers understand the challenges to prescribing and so help them develop approaches to overcome the current unsatisfactory situation.

Conclusions

The many thousands of UK patients self-medicating with non-regulated CBPMs and the international database evidence suggest these new medical products offer a significant advance in treatment for many in whom current medicines are either ineffective or poorly tolerated. They also offer the potential of significant cost savings to the NHS in terms of reduced hospital stays and less prescribing of other medicines particularly opioids for chronic pain. The failure of the medical and pharmacy professions to embrace CBPMs despite their being made ‘legal’ over 18 months ago is a great worry to patients and will already likely have led to preventable deaths from conditions such as epilepsy. We hope that this paper will help policymakers and prescribers understand the challenges to prescribing and so help them develop approaches to overcome the current highly unsatisfactory situation.

“On the right is my daily prescribed dose of drugs. Klonopin, Buspar and risperdal. One is a sedative, next is for anxiety and lastly an antipsychotic. The doctors prescribe these to me for ptsd related issues. Mainly, I can’t sleep. One day without these drugs and I am in full blown withdrawal. I can’t sleep, eat, go outside or even interact with anyone. I am fully medically dependent on these at this point.

On the left, you guessed it 😉 this treats every medical issue that I am currently facing. It makes my quality of life better. All anxiety is gone and I am able to get quality sleep. It 100% can replace the drugs on the right and at the same time have zero withdrawal symptoms. IN FACT, it treats the withdrawal symptoms from the drugs that I am currently prescribed. But guess what?? I cannot utilize the medication on the left because some as***le says it’s illegal and bad and no information to back up what I am telling them works for me.

Why is this not being talked about more? Why is this issue not on every news channel? Why do we not have a voice to represent the ones facing the issue that I am? Who decided to let government tell us that a habit forming drug is better than a non habit forming one? This is something that I will never be able to understand and I struggle with daily. “

Over the years, research into CBD has shown its antimicrobial, immunosuppressive, antiemetic, antiresorptive, spasmolytic, antitumor, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant potential.
Its anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antipsychotic effects are of particular interest in the treatment of mental disorders.

This newly published Spanish review focused on the anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antipsychotic effects of CBD form animal and human studies. Conclusions:

· Results suggest that CBD may be a potential therapy for treating anxiety, depression, , and related psychotic disorders

· Overall, animal models showed that the administration of CBD minimizes , , and stress-related behaviours

· In schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, a variety of animal models show that CBD is effective for modulating hyperactivity and PPI alterations, with a pharmacological profile similar to atypical antipsychotics and the involvement of various mechanisms

While it is important to understand the specific effects of single compounds, medical is so effective because of the interaction of different compounds - besides other cannabinoids/terpenoids have shown similar beneficial properties.
