As another year dawns, most people look at this time as an opportunity for ‘fresh starts.’ New Years’ resolutions are made; diet plans, fitness regimens, dry January and other health kicks. These will no doubt result in one feeling healthier and possibly better about themselves. But what about our emotional health? We have all experienced emotionally challenging events. These may have resulted in hurt or suffering and may still be having an impact on your everyday life, sometimes even subconsciously. Unfortunately, these feelings are not going to vanish, like a fairy tale, as the clock strikes midnight. They aren’t going to explode with the last firework that goes off on the 1st January.

In the same way that we look at aspects of our physical health to start the year afresh, why not exercise some self-care on our emotional needs? We all experience difficulties. It is how we overcome these that sets us apart. Some of us are able to go at it alone, whilst some of us need a little support to help with overwhelming feelings.

January is statistically a challenging month - the most depressing day of the year and also the month in which most couples file for divorce in the U.K. Counselling can help you manage and cope with any overwhelming emotional difficulties. So in the same way that it is ‘ok’ to sign up to new fitness and diet plans, why not explore counselling as measure to improve your overall well-being?

Thanks to advances in technology, your next-to-invisible treatment options may include ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces, lingual braces, which are placed behind the teeth, or clear aligner trays.

Today’s standard metal braces are much smaller and sleeker than those of even a generation ago, and less obvious than the braces you may have had.

Please review your options with Dr Wojtek Maroszek at a consultation to determine what type of treatment would be best suited for your needs.

We all feel anger from time to time; we are normally upset but not out of control. We continue to act rashly during and after the incident. Anger is part of how we protect ourselves. It is part of the adrenaline fight or flight response and triggers, not only changes in our emotions, but also physical changes.

There are many circumstances or reasons that can make us angry, often things that we can have little or no control over. Most of the time we are able to recall times during our lives that we have been angry and we can identify the causes. Problems arise when we feel powerless with regards to our anger.

Talking about our anger can feel embarrassing, and can stir up uncomfortable feelings about ourselves. Therapy offers you the space to express all these difficult feelings and experiences to someone who is not going to judge you. A therapist will listen to you and respect you and your opinions.

Therapy can help individuals feel in control of their anger. Therapy can help to increase our self-awareness, which in turn can aid in identifying the situations and warning signs that can trigger your anger. Once the individual has identified these, it is about learning new ways in which you can deal with the emotions.

Therapy can also help individuals explore and understand why the anger got out of control in the first place. Reasons could be low self-esteem, self-doubt, unrealistic expectations, poor coping skills or being overly emotional about ordinary things. By identifying the triggers and exploring new ways in which to manage these, therapy can help individuals control their anger rather than let their anger control them.

Traditional braces are comprised of brackets that are affixed to teeth and wires that are threaded through slots in the brackets. Some patients may also have metal bands encircling back teeth. Wires are held to brackets by tiny rubber bands called “ligatures” or “o-rings”.

Increasingly, brackets are generally made of ceramic or stainless steel. Wires are made of metal alloys and deliver a constant, gentle force to move teeth.

LOSS / BEREAVEMENT

After the loss of a loved one, we can often experience a wide variety of emotions – shock, disbelief, numbness, sadness, anger, loneliness, helplessness or hopelessness. Your world may seem like it has been turned upside down. The emotions can be ever changing and can often catch us off guard, often leading us to feel and behave out of character.

A support system can help in overcoming some of the hurdles experienced with grief. Whilst family and friends are vital, they too may be experiencing their own grief and may not be available to help you through yours. Other times our loved ones may be willing to help us but they simply do not know how to, they do not want to see someone they love in pain and suffering. We often hide these feelings to avoid upsetting those around us.

Counselling therapy provides the individual the opportunity to express these feelings of despair and sadness, without fear of upsetting anyone. A therapist will provide an environment for the individual to talk about their loss whilst also explore new methods in which the individual can adjust to their new life with all its changes and thereby manage their range of emotions, whilst remaining in control.

ANXIETY

We all experience times of worry, during which feelings of anxiety may occur. This can often feel manageable; we are able to understand where these feelings are coming from and consequently work through them. Sometimes however these feelings of anxiety are harder to manage and we can feel out of control. At these times the feelings of anxiety can take over our lives and we can struggle through our day to day. As soon as one anxious thought feels resolved, another thought arises about another issue and we are soon in a relentless cycle of anxiety.

Talking therapies can help get these feelings under control. Counselling provides the space in which individuals can talk to someone about all the worries and feelings associated with their anxiety, and the impact this has on their lives. Therapists will provide a safe space to give individuals time to talk, cry, shout or think. It is an opportunity to explore problems in a different way with someone who will respect the individual and their opinions.

Counselling assists people to become more self-aware. It will not magic problems away, but in increasing individual’s self-awareness, it can provide them with the necessary tools to look at their problems in a different way. Someone who is worried and anxious about a specific problem may find that counselling doesn’t make the problem disappear but they are able to look at this from an alternative perspective. This is often the key to implementing positive changes on managing their difficulties and getting them back on a path where they are self-managing and in control.

More on Dr Jaime Bendeck:

'I like the definition of health as given by the World Health Organisation as the basis of how to stay healthy: “Health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being”. Therefore, the way to stay healthy will logically include these three important elements.

For me, the most important element is that of the mental state of health. I recently complimented a 96 year old patient who looked and behaved a lot younger than her chronological age would otherwise suggest. She replied that this was due to her not having negative attitudes to others and always being thankful for her circumstances in life. Having worked with many less fortunate societies than that found in Gibraltar, I can certainly relate to this outlook and agree that we should count our blessings. This is the first step to staying mentally healthy which in turn leads to maintaining physical health as one’s mood is intimately connected to one’s body.

Regarding the physical side of health, people ought to be aware of their past family history as this can strongly influence present or future illnesses. This can include heart disease, certain types of serious illnesses such as colon or breast cancers, as well as diabetes and other diseases. My global well-man, well-woman approach to patients means that I can prevent or quickly identify such issues before they become entrenched. My public health speciality background has allowed my practice to be preventive and health fostering whilst also comprehensively diagnostic or curative as required'.
