Robotic-assisted surgery now underway at the GHA
The Gibraltar Health Authority has officially launched robotic-assisted surgery at St Bernard’s Hospital, marking a major milestone in the evolution of surgical care in Gibraltar.
The programme is now fully operational, with five successful General Surgery procedures already carried out locally in the purpose-built Kusuma Robotic Surgery Suite. This means that robotic surgery is no longer a future aspiration for the GHA, but a reality already delivering benefits to patients.
Robotic-assisted surgery allows surgeons to operate with greater precision, enhanced visualisation and improved control, particularly in complex or confined anatomical areas. This technology is widely used in leading hospitals internationally and supports better clinical outcomes while strengthening the skills and capabilities of local surgical teams.
The introduction of the system has been made possible through collaboration with international medical technology partner MicroPort, alongside the generous support of local charity partners, including Kusuma Trust and Prostate Cancer Gibraltar.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Health and Care, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, said the programme sends a clear signal about the direction of travel for the GHA: a health service that is modern, ambitious and focused on delivering better care for patients here in Gibraltar.
The GHA’s robotic-assisted surgery programme will continue to expand throughout 2026, with plans to extend its use into additional specialties, further strengthening access to advanced surgical treatment locally.
