There is always more to a story than what is presented infront of you …🕵🏼
The iceberg analogy is useful to explain to patients the possible “WHY” they are experiencing their pain or injury and, more importantly, it provides key information which will be used to determine the individuals rehab and treatment plan. 👩🏼💻
The tip of the iceberg is how the person presents their symptoms e.g knee pain, shoulder pain, back pain. This is the pain that is likely to be stopping them from carrying out the day-day activities they enjoy doing. ⛹🏽♀️🏌🏼🏋🏻🚴🏼♂️
Many muscles, tissues, tendons etc are connected to that part of the body that hurts🧬…..This is where the submerged part of iceberg comes into it.
The “unseen” part represents the patients previous injury history, habits, beliefs, emotional stressors etc. Having a good understanding of this is crucial in order to try and learn the WHY. 🔍
Adaptions or patterns as a result of an old injury could be contributing to the current one, e.g a muscle group might not be doing its job and causing stress on other areas.❤️🩹
An example-
A herniated disc in the lumbar spine doesn’t happen overnight. It most likely has been under stress for weeks, months or even years before you bend over to tie your shoe and it herniates creating pain into the back and leg.💥
In the clinic, I aim to work on addressing the painful symptoms and also the potential underlying contributors so that the patient has the knowledge and tools to improve themselves and prevent the problem from reoccurring or worsening. 💪🏼
