Last week, the Gambia Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (GAMATCA) proudly participated in the 36th IFATCA Africa & Middle East Regional Meeting, held in the breathtaking Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The meeting, themed “Securing the Skies: Strengthening ATM Capacity through Strategic Recruitment, Training, and Retention,” brought together government officials and aviation leaders, including ministers of transport from Zimbabwe and Ghana and the minister of aviation and airspace development from Nigeria, to discuss the future of Air Traffic Management (ATM) in the region.

The event provided valuable insights into strengthening human capacity and advancing ATM systems—insights that will support ongoing improvements in The Gambia’s aviation sector.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for their invaluable support in sponsoring our delegate, ATCO Omar Jammeh, to represent The Gambia. This partnership continues to strengthen our shared commitment to enhancing aviation safety, capacity development, and professional excellence.

The term ATSEP is defined by the CIR (EU) 2017/373 of 1 March 2017

To us as ATCOs they are the people who keep our functional system working, they are indispensable and part of our safety critical team keeping the skies safe.

Today, NATCA recognizes the International Day of the Controller, the observance recognizing the vital work that is done by air traffic controllers around the world to keep the global airspace operating safely and efficiently.

In the U.S., American controllers are presently operating under enormous stress and distraction as they continue to be responsible for moving 35,000 flights with millions of passengers and many tons of cargo every day without pay. These hardworking Americans are a vital engine for the U.S. economy and our modern way of life and deserve to be paid for the work they are performing.

NATCA honors our members and thanks them for their unwavering commitment to aviation safety. This current situation is unacceptable. The government shutdown must end immediately.
