It's been quite a while since we have posted anything on our page. Let's keep the spirit of community alive (centre or no centre).

If you are a parent stuck in the heat of Athens with children who finish school in the middle of June you may be wondering just how many hours of screen time is too much?

How about some beach and park alternatives this summer? We were blessed with a slightly cloudy day so headed into Plaka in the centre of Athens. A stroll after a coffee in a shaded piazza led us to the simple little Museum of School Life and Education.

Flashes of my own 80's childhood, toys and school experience (wooden flip top desks with pencil holder anybody?) My children especially enjoyed the traditional role play classroom where we all got too much into the strict stereotype role.

We spent an hour inside which is probably the maximum. This museum is best for children who are of school age in terms of its subject matter and opportunities for interaction. It charged 5EUR per adult but children were free.

It should be noted that the memory of corporal punishment should certainly not be taken lightly but it was an unfortunate reality of some of our own educational experiences. We discussed how we are lucky to be able to learn without the fear of it (in most countries) anymore.

A NEW MOON

It seems a million years ago that I became a first time, ex-pat mother in Athens, Greece. Having literally fought my way to a little clubhouse named Friends Corner with a screaming newborn in a pram I was relieved to be welcomed with open arms.

There was tea, sympathy, breast feeding pillows and people that were just a little bit like me. Many pleasant mornings were spent watching my son and his subsequent little sister engage in stimulating activities and explore the environment freely.

We were so sad when it finally closed it’s doors in 2018.

Community is where the heart is when you are far from home. With this in mind. I have decided to renew the space and open it’s doors once more so that another generation can benefit as my own and many families have done before us.
