The importance of lower respiratory infections to increased morbidity and mortality

Lower respiratory infections (LRI) are a major global contributor to morbidity and mortality. In the era of COVID-19 pandemic-associated interventions like social distancing, not only was COVID-19 transmission reduced, but also the transmission of other LRI pathogens in 2020 and 2021.

From 1990 to 2019, the global all-age non-COVID LRI mortality rate declined 41.7%.

From 2019 to 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the global all-age non-COVID LRI mortality rate declined 16%, driven by the 71.8% and 66.7% declines in the number of influenza and RSV deaths, respectively.

💡This study provides insight on the changing incidence of non-COVID respiratory infections in the era of pandemic-associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). It also illustrates the high burden LRIs pose, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where access to health care services and vaccines can prevent LRI transmission and mortality.
