Join us for the Mountains of Greece Conference in Athens, October 22-24! In-person registration is full, but you can join us on Zoom. This special conference at the British School at Athens aims to shed new light on the heritage of mountain regions in Greece and explores how that heritage can best be protected for the future, in the context of the current rapid expansion of mountain tourism and development in Greece.

How can we activate the huge untapped potential for expanded engagement with history, heritage, and conservation in the mountain landscapes of Greece? How can we ensure a sustainable approach to environmental and cultural preservation?

We define heritage in the broadest possible sense, to include archaeological, botanical, and cultural heritage, encompassing not only physical sites and material culture, but also stories and images of mountain life, from antiquity to the 21st century.

The conference brings together academics, writers, botanists, conservationists, policy makers, mountain tourism professionals, and local community representatives to share their distinctive perspectives. We also aim to take a comparative approach, joining up the challenges faced by Greek mountain communities and organizations with similar challenges from other mountain regions around the world.

The island of Kythera is a beloved island to residents and visitors alike. It was the home of famed herbalist Juliette de Bairacli Levy in the latter part of her life. Today, the island is facing the threat of industrial wind farm installation that will devastate the pristine nature of the island and transform it into an industrial zone.

Please take a moment to voice your concerns against this construction. Specific instructions at the link. Your voice matters!

We’ve now collected over 1,000 signatures! These will be delivered to the relevant ministry in Greece in the coming days.

Hellebore is a deceptively beautiful plant with poisonous properties. Many dangers are associated with using this plant. According to the ancient physician Dioscorides, the digger of the plant must eat garlic beforehand, face east and pray to Apollo and Asclepius when removing the root from the soil. Among many medicinal uses, Dioscorides recommended the plant for the insane.

A great gift for people who are destroying humanity.

The hot and dry Mediterranean climate of Greece can make it challenging to maintain a healthy garden. During the past several months, I have had the opportunity to visit flourishing gardens in Athens and on the islands of Evia and Syros.

The Network for Sustainable Cyclades is a citizen-led movement trying to protect sensitive ecosystems and the sustainability of the environment against uncontrolled tourist development and new construction. It is an unfortunate occurrence happening throughout the islands that needs quick action before the landscape is completely degraded. Read more about the movement and sign the petition to help protect the botanical treasures and beautiful landscape of the Cyclades region.

We support peace. We are against genocide and war and starvation and torture centers and relentless killing of innocent people.

We support peace. We are against racism and fascism and supremacy ideologies.

We support peace, peace, peace. The birds in the sky are singing its praises. The trees are swaying to its melody. The sea is dancing upon its shores of happiness.

May the sound of peace reign upon us all in equal measure and relieve those suffering from the immeasurable depths of grief, despair, and loss.

Peace. 🕊️
