Fact 4: When social pain feels physical

Being ignored, excluded, or rejected doesn’t just feel painful metaphorically. Brain imaging shows that social pain activates many of the same brain regions involved in physical pain, especially areas that process distress and threat. To your brain, a broken bond can register like a wound.

This overlap likely exists for survival. For early humans, social connection meant safety, food, and protection. Being pushed out of the group was dangerous, so the brain evolved to treat social rejection as a serious threat. Pain became the signal to pay attention and repair the connection.

That’s why heartbreak, humiliation, or exclusion can feel overwhelming and why social rejection can linger longer than a physical bruise. Your brain is responding as if something vital has been damaged.

ΔΙΕΘΝΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΞΑΛΕΙΨΗ ΤΗΣ #ΒΙΑΣ ΚΑΤΑ ΤΩΝ #ΓΥΝΑΙΚΩΝ. Το ΕΚΚΕ διεξήγαγε τη μεγάλη έρευνα για την #έμφυλη και άλλων μορφών διαπροσωπικής βίας (EU- ) στην Ελλάδα, με επιστημονικό υπεύθυνο τον καθηγητή Απόστολο Παπαδόπουλο. Η έρευνα «Gender based violence against women and other forms of interpersonal violence, EU-GBV», (Έμφυλη βία κατά των γυναικών και άλλες μορφές διαπροσωπικής βίας στην Ελλάδα) χρηματοδοτήθηκε από τη Eurostat και υλοποιήθηκε από το ΕΚΚΕ (2021-2023).
