An 85 year old patient presented with mild pain yesterday at my office and his panoramic revealed this! We are now waiting for his CBCT scan to assess the true extent of this lesion in his lower jaw.
Despite the obvious pathology....I feel its an important lesson to 'why' you should attend the dentist regularly and even more why every 3/4 years we as dentists request a panoramic, this is the second time this year that we discovered quite advanced lesions in patients ...its not financial its an essential diagnostic tool.

This is an interesting article and quite a traumatic medical journey for this lady but sadly I have posted this article to reassure our Athens based patients that we have an amazing stomatology group in Athens ( many)and we can get these lesions diagnosed very quickly and removed, very rarely do we see this situation that the patient has had the lymph nodes removed etc which is a much bigger operation as we catch these lesions early. Patients however must get checked if they have a persisitent ulcer or white patch in their mouth, that we cannot control and also the habits that contribute to mouth lesions...HPV virus, smoking, excessive alcohol, spicy food .....stay aware of your mouth without being fanatic only a small percentage get oral cancer..its main increase is incidence is due go the HPV infection.

Helen Keough noticed a new ulcer had appeared underneath her tongue in summer last year. The 44-year-old project manager believed the painful sore was caused by being 'busy and run down'.

This was a first for me … a patient brought in a coca cola light tin and put it on the table… usually patients hide the habits that I try to tell them to avoid. Some patients think it’s only the normal Coca Cola that ruins their teeth but Coca Cola light has the ingredients listed in the photo below.. we use in dentistry phosphoric acid to etch the surface of the enamel, we use citric acid to etch the roots of teeth in periodontal therapies so this is no innocent drink, this sweeteners are very questionable and to top it all its caffeinated !!! Patients avoid these drinks , sugar may be missing but plenty of toxic chemicals in them not only for your teeth but also for your body as a whole .
