Course description:
This 10-day course is designed for Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists treating infants and young children who have Neuro-Motor Disorders. The course provides information related to typical and atypical development of infants including gross motor, sensory, UE, LE, and fine-motor, assessment and treatment planning from the perspective of the ICF Model, treatment strategies for infants, parent education, medical management and adjuncts to treatment. Major emphasis is on direct treatment strategies which will be covered through patient practicums, treatment labs and patient demonstrations.
• Daily lectures will enhance information and clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of babies.
• Daily treatment practicums will enhance clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of babies.
• Videotapes will be used to problem solve system impairments for infants.
• Videotapes will be used to study the assessment and treatment of infants treated in demonstration sessions.
• Treatment demonstrations will be used to demonstrate assessment, problem solving and treatment of specific infants.
• Labs with participants and dolls will augment the therapist’s understanding of infant treatment techniques.
• The book by Lois Bly Baby Treatment Based on NDT Principles is recommended and will be used throughout the course.
Course Objectives, Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of how Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy contribute to the treatment of infants.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the details and principles of the typical motor development during the first 12 months.
3. Describe how trunk development affects head control, upper extremity development and use and lower extremity development and use.
4. Describe how compensatory movements in the first year of life may lead to atypical motor development.
5. Identify the impairments and compensations that can lead to secondary impairments such as contractures, deformities and severe activity limitations.
6. Describe the postural control requirements for performing functional tasks.
7. Describe the influence of postural control and movement on play, social interaction, communication and feeding.
8. Analyze typical and atypical movement components throughout movement sequences during treatment demonstrations and treatment practicums.
9. Identify and describe Activity Limitations and Participation Restrictions in infants (related to PT, OT, and ST)
10. Prepare and demonstrate a discipline specific treatment plan including primary and secondary impairments, desired functional outcomes, parent education and equipment recommendations.
Biographies
Lois Bly, PT, MA, C/NDT is an internationally respected NDTA Coordinator Instructor and clinician who has offered seminars, workshops and NDT certificate courses throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile, South Africa, Hong Kong, Scotland, and Ireland. Ms. Bly was certified in Neuro-Developmental Treatment by the Bobaths in London and received her NDT Instructors Certification from Mary Quinton and Dr. Elsbeth Koeng of Switzerland. She received her Master’s Degree in Motor Learning at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is the author of the monograph, Components of Normal Movement During the First Year of Life and Abnormal Motor Development, and the books Motor Skills Acquisition in the First Year and Baby Treatment Based on NDT Principles and co-author with Allison Whiteside of the book Facilitation Techniques Based on NDT Principles. She also published the Motor Skills Checklist based on the book Motor Skills Acquisition in the First Year. Her most recent publication, 2011, is a monograph, Components of Typical and Atypical Motor Development.
Madonna Nash, OTR/L. received her degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Illinois in 1978. She has been an NDT/OT Instructor since 1984 and is a member of NDTA, AOTA and IOTA. She has taught several Pediatric Certificate courses, Advanced Baby Courses, Handling, UE, and blending NDT and SI courses in the US and internationally. Madonna is currently consulting and teaching courses throughout the world.
