Eastern Crete bears no resemblance to the party villages of the north of the island. Prepare to enter the real Crete, where mountain villages meander down to sleepy village resorts and perfectly isolated beaches. It is the ‘natural Crete’ where beautiful mountains meet crystal clear, azure tranquil lagoons. You can certainly bank on perfect sunshine for your choice of local beaches or the many secluded coves just a little further away by car. A favourite is 5 minutes away by car, the perfect Diaskari beach with its gently shelving waters and its perfect authentic taverna where guests sit under an ancient tree and enjoy the local delicacies or the fresh fish harvested from its very own nets. Visit the main beach of the resort of Makrygialos if you like watersports- kids of all ages love the jet skis, doughnuts and mattress and all are reasonably priced. A car is an absolute essential if you are to really benefit from this gorgeous region- and the route over from Heraklion or Sitia airports themselves really sets your heart racing as you pass azure bays and rise past quaint Greek churches and monasteries. The mountain villages surrounding Makrygialos are the 'true' Greece, where unspoiled tavernas nestle amongst olive trees and where the locals gather in their families and watch time tick slowly by. Make sure you sample the olives and the local wine, often harvested by the owners themselves- succulent ingredients for perfect days. Many owners and their guests head towards Makrygialos beach front at night, where reasonably priced restaurants sit alongside the gently lapping waters- a fabulous night out just on your doorstep. Ierepetra and Sitia are both worth a visit for a little more bustling, port-side activity and some retail therapy. For the more active on foot, there are plenty of local gorges to explore or ancient archaeological or religious sites to visit, all only a short drive away. Lagada Bay Resort
Lagada Bay Resort nestles at the foot of the mountains on the sites of former goat herders- yet it brings elegance and modern day, low-rise luxury to this unspoiled area. Phases One and Two share two exquisite pools and are nestled in peaceful, lush landscaped gardens with a view of the sea that is really hard to beat. Onsite, you will find seating/ eating areas and plenty of sunbeds to accommodate your needs. Outside showers are also readily available. Dotted around the site are secluded little amphitheatres where quite often guests will gather for an impromptu barbecue or just a chat with a glass of wine after a hard day at the poolside. The front of the resort has ample parking bays and there is also space at the rear too for your car. The site enjoys onsite free wifi for those who daren’t leave their computers and phones at home! There is also a shuttle service for those who do not want to drive into the village and airport transfers can also be arranged. The resort is professionally maintained by an experienced onsite management team who can assist you with anything you require, including welcome packs, extra cleaning or just handy hints to make the most of your time here. Bayview enjoys excellent access- across some olive groves- to the perfect Lagada Beach if you need a break from the pool, but, in essence, here is the best place to chill, relax and unwind in gorgeous, tranquil and safe surroundings. The resort is situated just a few minutes’ drive from Makrygialos itself- a typical, quaint, Cretan seaside village with friendly locals all happy to chat. Although typically Greek, it will house anything you might need in the local supermarkets and gift shops so is fantastically convenient and also handy for ATMs for holiday money. Also convenient is the local doctor, dentist, pharmacy and hairdresser so you’re certainly not in the land that time forgot!
