What causes swollen tonsils?
Kids with swollen tonsils suffer a host of problems including teeth grinding, gasping, restless sleep, mouth breathing, and snoring.
In order to grow the jaw, we need the child to be breathing and sleeping better.
Sleep disorders often go alongside swollen tonsils, so it's an issue we need to dig into deeper.
General symptoms include:
-Chronic sore throat and throat infections
-Difficult or painful swallowing.
-Fever
-A scratchy, muffled or throaty voice.
-Bad breath.
-Gagging and difficulty eating
A recent study of 1409 kids with swollen adenoids & tonsils had significantly higher rates of iron deficiency. doi: 10.21037/ajo-20-89
Iron plays a key role in a healthy immune system.
Lower levels of the mineral can make someone more susceptible to infections. Red blood cells help to transport oxygen to the spleen, which is one place where infections can be fought off.
Red blood cells also carry oxygen to the lymph nodes, which house infection-fighting white blood cells.
When someone has an iron deficiency, the white blood cells aren’t being produced as well, and they’re not as strong because they’re not getting enough oxygen, making that person more susceptible to infections.
In terms of the tonsils, they are part of a lymphatic ring that protect your nose and throat.
Lymphatic drainage requires
- breathing, movement, and effective immune response.
Lack of iron will dull the immune response, clogging up the system with invaders that can't dealt with.
Mouth breathing stunts the lymphathic drainage of the head and neck.
Low tongue posture prevents the proper opening of the back of the throat during swallowing, further stunting lymphatic blockage.
If you look at the link between iron deficiency, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea, we see.a vicious triangle that threatens our children's sleep.
Surgery? Anything from grade II-III may indicate surgery depending on the presentation.
The long term goal is to build iron back up to help blood flow to the lymph tissue - lots of red meat and liver!
