Once weekly semaglutide injections reduced alcohol consumption in patients with alcohol use disorder and comorbid obesity.

Results of the randomized controlled trial, the first, to the authors’ knowledge, to evaluate the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide in patients seeking treatment for AUD who had comorbid obesity, also showed significant effects on multiple alcohol-related outcomes.

AUD is a chronic brain disorder characterized by impaired control over drinking and compulsive alcohol use. Despite decades of research, only three medications — disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone — have been approved by the FDA for AUD, underscoring the urgent need for more effective treatments. A scientific review has raised fresh concerns about the long-term cancer risks of va**ng, concluding that e-cigarettes are probably carcinogenic, while also acknowledging significant gaps in the evidence.

The analysis of reviews and single studies published since 2017 concluded that ni****ne va**ng “likely” contributes to oral and lung cancers. But the actual risks and how they compare with those from smoking are impossible to calculate at this point.
