The emotions associated with the Spleen system are essentially digesting the same thought over and over again. This pattern uses lots of Qi which results in a weakened digestion. The Spleen system (partnered with the Stomach) is responsible for transforming and transporting everything we take in - or digest. It controls Blood and our muscles. The Spleen opens to the mouth and manifests on the lips!

As a result of using excess Qi on those thoughts, the Spleen can produce symptoms like easy to bruise, dry lips, muscle fatigue, loose stools, poor appetite, poor absorption of nutrients from food, constipation, bloating, eating disorders, weight imbalances.

Suppressed grief, unresolved sorrow, unable to let go of a person or event,.. what do those all have in common? They relate to the Lung and Large Intestine system.

The Lung organ system is all about "letting go". The partner to the Lung is the Large Intestine so you can see why this physically and metaphorically makes sense. This element relates to our self-worth, our fortitude against the outside world in the form of personal boundaries, our ability to bond with others. The loss of an established personal bond would lead to grief, which is the emotion associated with this group. On the other hand, a healthy energy (or Qi), in our Lungs is associated with clear thinking, maturity, openness to new ideas and good communication.

The nose is the sensory organ related to the Lung. Runny nose, sneezing, congested sinuses, loss of smell, are all symptoms of compromised Lung function.

Constipation is the physical manifestation of not being able to let go. This problem relates directly to the Lung and Large Intestine.

The skin is considered the "third Lung", and is the tissue associated with this organ system. For beautiful skin, healthy Lung function and bowel movements are imperative.

Winter season is all about introspection and reflection, and asks us to nourish our root of life, the Kidney system.

Adrenal fatigue, fertility issues, early graying of hair, tinnitus, back pain, knee pain, low libido, increased frequency and urgency to urinate - are all signals that the Kidneys need some attention.

Did you know that foods that are black in color strengthen the Kidneys? Or that massaging the ears strengthens the Kidney system?

Winter is associated with the Kidneys which hold the body's energy. Winter is about rest and retreating inwards (think meditation, writing, Qigong) in order to connect to ourselves and our Kidney energy.

The ears are the sense organs related to the Kidneys. Kidney imbalance manifests as early aging symptoms like gray hair, knee pain, low libido, increased frequency and urgency to urinate, lower back pain, etc. Hearing problems are treated through the Kidneys, and even massaging the ears strengthens the Kidneys. The quiet and stillness of Winter allows us to hear more of the world than the buzzing activities of Summer. This forces us to slow down, rest and relax.

Late Winter -Kapha Energy Accumulation

Consider food which tends to reduce kapha dosha while at the same time doesn’t provoke vāta dosha. For example, [unyeasted] wholewheat bread, steamed vegetables and warm soup along with ghee are nourishing considerations. In order to promote optimal digestion, consider adding various spices to your food such as cinnamon, cloves and black pepper; this stimulates Agni ~ the digestive metabolic fire.

Stay Warm With Warming Herbal Teas:
i.e. cinnamon & ginger tea

During this time of year, days become more gloomy and may increase the tendency towards sadness & depression; [i.e. “seasonal affective disorder”]. Therefore, it’s helpful to expose oneself to the warmth of sunlight when possible. To help counter the ‘gloominess of winter’, consider wearing bright, uplifting & warming colors [i.e. red & orange] to help improve one’s state of mind and sense of well-being.

When Kapha Is Provoked During Winter …

Signs and symptoms of provoked kapha tend to include:
– catching a cold
– sinus congestion
– pulmonary congestion with productive cough
– bronchitis

Herbs useful to help pacify kapha dosha:
– punarnavā
– licorice
– ginger
– pippalī
– black pepper
