Most of our clients who present with sexual dysfunction experience anxiety. Yet anxiety manifests in diverse ways, with different types of anxiety often co-existing. S*xual phobia, sexual performance anxiety, attachment anxiety, distress and somatic symptoms distress are only some.
In this paper, each type of anxiety is described in terms of its prevalence, assessment, covariates and consequences, intervention strategies, and future directions for research. The paper suggests that clinicians working with sexual dysfunctions should routinely screen for cues suggestive of multiple types of anxiety and assess their potential impact on three levels of functioning: (a) specific sexual situations, (b) the client’s overall sexual life, and (c) broader life functioning.

Undiagnosed Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) often complicates the management of patients with sexual dysfunction, largely due to clinicians' unfamiliarity with SSD. While SSD and sexual dysfunction are distinct conditions, they appear closely interconnected, presenting significant clinical challenges. I wrote an article just published on IJIR in order to raise awareness among clinicians about the potential indicators of SSD in patients with sexual dysfunction and to offer management strategies that can enhance clinical effectiveness.
