Making reflexology a formal branch of medicine, rather than just an adjunct therapy, is advocated based on several significant arguments supported by research and healthcare trends:

- **Broader Therapeutic Benefits:** Reflexology has demonstrated ability to reduce pain, anxiety, stress, depression, fatigue, and some symptoms associated with conditions like migraines, arthritis, and even cancer[1][2][3][4]. Studies report improvements in blood pressure, blood circulation, neural pathway activation, and overall well-being[3][5].

- **Physiological & Biochemical Effects:** Some research reveals measurable physiological and biochemical changes from reflexology—including reduced cortisol and stress markers, and enhanced organ function as measured by blood flow studies[6][5]. These effects go beyond placebo or general relaxation, suggesting mechanisms that warrant systematic medical integration[6][5].

- **Accessibility and Safety:** Reflexology is generally considered safe, noninvasive, and inexpensive, making it accessible to various populations (elderly, children, pregnant women, and terminally ill)[6]. As a recognized form of care in countries like China, reflexology is already integrated into hospitals and healthcare settings—demonstrating feasibility and potential cost savings when scaled[7][6].

- **Potential for Preventive and Complementary Care:** Reflexology isn't just about symptom relief; it is used as preventive medicine aimed at maintaining balance and well-being[7]. Integrating such approaches into mainstream medicine could reduce reliance on pharmaceuticals and lower the burden of chronic stress- and pain-related conditions.

- **Directions in Medical Research and Policy:** The shift towards including complementary therapies within mainstream health systems is already visible, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia[7][6]. Official recognition would help set standards for training, research, and practice—enhancing safety and credibility.

- **Demand for Better Evidence and Guidelines:** Currently, the main barrier is the need for larger, high-quality clinical trials to clarify long-term efficacy and exact mechanisms[6][5]. Making reflexology a formal branch would encourage rigorous research funding and ultimately enable physicians to recommend it with greater confidence.

In sum, formalizing reflexology not only reflects its growing use and reported efficacy globally, but also gives it a platform for standardized research, regulation, and integration—potentially expanding non-pharmacologic, holistic care options for patients while fostering an evidence-based approach within medicine[3][7][6][5].

World Reflexology Week 2025 ✨️👣✨️
I thought I would celebrate by sharing some lessor known facts of this wonderful treatment.
👣 Reflexology is an ancient practice, which has been around since 2330 BC.
👣 Modern-day reflexology was first used by an ENT doctor called William Fitzgerald and went by the name Zone therapy. It was actually used as a form of early anaesthetic for very minor surgeries.
👣 In Denmark and Sweden, reflexology is the most popular form of holistic therapy
👣 Reflexology can be performed on our feet, hands, face and ears.
👣 Although Reflexologists are not allowed to diagnose, imbalances can potentially be detected from your feet.
👣 Miniature Maps of the Body – feet are detailed maps and depict various organs and body systems.
👣 Reflexologists can incorporate, ‘foot reading’ where the shape, size and characteristics of a person’s feet to gain insight into their personality traits and emotional state. Foot reading is not scientifically validated. I do not use it within my reflexology practice.
👣 Clients have reported seeing colour and / or feeling sensations in their bodies as their feet are worked upon. Some can feel energised after a treatment or indeed fall asleep during one. Everyone experiences it differently.
👣 Reflexology Paths – in some Asian countries you can find reflexology paths, which are paved walkways with a textured surface. This stimulates the feet as you walk and are designed as a a ‘pick me up’.
👣 Animal Reflexology – The idea is that animals gain the same benefits as humans, although this is still a subject of debate by vets. I haven’t trained or had any experience of this.
Reflexology is a rich and complex practice with deep historical roots and many benefits. While it’s often associated with simple foot massage, it’s much more than that. Reflexology’s ability to work throughout the body, and its potential to help with so many health issues, makes it a powerful tool for promoting overall wellbeing. Whether you’re looking to relieve stress, manage pain, or support your body’s natural healing processes, reflexology offers a personalised and holistic approach to health.

A NEW SEASON

I've always regarded September as the beginning of the reflexology season.
From the practitioner's point of view, it refers to the month after a holiday or a break from treatments, a time when we have renewed our inner energy not only to revitalise ourselves but also to enhance the effectiveness of our treatments.

Those of you who follow my blogs and webinars will know that I have dedicated many years to protecting and preserving the original principles of reflexology, which I discuss and demonstrate during my online presentations. I am pleased to inform you that this archived material will soon be available for download.

It has been well over fifty years since I first worked professionally with feet.
I am glad to stay in contact with some of those who started their reflexology journeys with me, and some even before I did, and who are still practising. We all agree that the main difference between reflexology then and now can be summed up in one word: authority, which signifies control and mastery of a subject.

The fact is that there are far more complaints from people who receive a treatment delivered in a weak and unprofessional way than from those who complain of excessive pressure.
A reflexology treatment should involve applying various contacts to the feet alongside mobilisation movements. This not only frees the structures of the feet, such as muscles and joints, but also the fascia. In this way, a treatment not only influences body systems through the reflexes but also supports the body's structural integrity.
A treatment administered in this way becomes poetry in motion from start to finish.

My webinar on September 6th will explore and demonstrate this subject. Reflexology is a continually evolving therapy; therefore, it is essential for practitioners to constantly evolve to provide clients with the most effective treatments possible.

MAXIMISING THE POTENTIAL OF REFLEXOLOGY

I will soon make downloads available from my extensive archive collection. These include articles that will be very valuable, as they offer a deeper understanding of reflexology, leading to more effective treatments.

Today, more than ever, reflexology has established itself as a mainstream therapy with significant therapeutic and professional potential. To achieve this, reflexology practitioners must acquire extensive knowledge about how electrical energy moves through the body. Once understood, this will highlight the ‘key’ reflexes that have the potential for a therapeutic outcome.

THE PIEZOELECTRIC ACTION
Crystals are present throughout the fascia as crystalline structures within it. When pressure or torsion is applied to the fascia in the feet during a treatment, a piezoelectric potential is generated.

Fascia also comprises a liquid crystal substance. This substance surrounds all structures within our body; muscles, bones, arteries, and veins are all embedded within the fascia.

Emotional disturbances are often trapped within the fascia. When these are released through reflexology, an emotional release can take place. Additionally, trapped fascial disturbances can cause structural lesions or deformities. The term 'body armouring' was previously used to describe this phenomenon.
